Hi there.

I have just setup GamEx for the first time and everything seemed fine until I went to update the ROM list for the first time and it just sits there for a long time and seems like it has crashed. I have left it for upto 20-30 mins before forcing an end task. I have double checked all the paths and they are correct and I have also turned of verify roms as well. I have made sure dot net is upto date as well.

The paths are definately correct as I have set up various FEs to find which I like the best so I know it works for others. I do have a full mame rom set but I know other programs have taken a few mins at most.

Any help greatly appreciated.

First off, whenever you have a problem that results in a crash, you will get the best help if you include the log file. As for your error that you are describing, it could be nothing or it could be something. Depending on your system, it can take a LONG time to build the list. On slower machines, I have heard of it taking 30-45 minutes. On my machines, it usually takes on the order of 20 minutes. When it's building the list, it will give you cues to tell what's going on though, so I wouldn't consider it a 'hang'. If you watch, the thing that takes the longest is verifying the roms. It will give you a number to show how many it's gone through, so as long as it's changing, things are going ok.

The things to check are:

* paths (roms, mame.exe, etc.)

* same version of MAME and roms

* make sure you are using a modern version of MAME (older versions used a different format for outputting lists)

* make sure that if you are not using the official MAME release, that your version is compatible with MAME's verify roms capability. If you don't know, try using the official release...

Thank you for the reply here is my log file. I left it running when I went to bed so it definately had enough time to run but it still crashed.

I don't see anything in the log that's out of the ordinary. My suggestion now would be to rename your 'GameEx' directory to something like 'GameEx1'. Then, install a fresh copy in the original location (that way you have your original version backed up). Now, get a copy of the latest official version of MAME and install it in a new location (or you could install it in your current MAME directory). Now, setup *only* the required MAME directory info in GameEx and try an update rom list.

I tried loasd of different thing sand in the end it turns out my computer didnt like the Soul Calibur theme and crashed whenever I tried to update the rom list or launch a game. Thanks for the help.

Ahhh, some themes do cause problems on some computers. I don't know what causes it, but if things break using the default theme and settings, that's when you have real problems :wacko:

Glad you got it fixed!
