GameEx crashes when I try to view manuals. I'm running the latest version of GameEx (the one just released) on a laptop with XP and Directx 9.0c. From looking at the log, it looks like there's some kind of issue with DirectDraw. However, I've tested DirectDraw using dxdiag and it there isn't a problem. GameEx was installed and configured with the default settings.

I've also tried turning off advanced graphics, and installing it on a newer desktop running Vista. Both cases, gave me the same problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does this happen with all files or just select ones?

I've tried numerous manuals. I have no problem opening them in Adobe, so it's not a problem with teh manual files.

And the winner is... 'Try a different theme'.

Thanks for the suggestion kenobi I wouldn't have guessed that from the error I got. Any idea what causes this? I'm guessing it's a fluke and I can probably just dupe or recreate it since the theme works fine on my machine. More just curious how/why a theme would cause a DirectX. Even stranger to me is that the error only happens when selecting certain console emu's. Seems like if it was theme related it would happen out of the gate when launching.

Why not?

It appears that I'm only having problems viewing manuals for the Atari 2600 that are for the games that Atari actually made (ie. Adventure). The only thing I can think of is its having a problem with all the black on the front cover. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

I'm running the latest directx and drivers. I've also tried changing to 16-bit color.

I've attached the one of the manuals. Could someone please take a moment and let me know if they are able to open it?

Thanks!

I don't have any manuals on my computer for the games of any emulators, so I don't know what to expect. I did download yours and set up the paths, etc. I will say that when I tried to download, it automatically started Adobe, and I saved it from Adobe into the proper file. (maybe zip the file so that doesn't happen?)

When I go to a game that does not have the manual, Gameex does not show the "Manual" option. When I go to the game that does have the manual Gameex shows the "manual" option. It seems like all is well.

When I move the cursor and highlight "manual", nothing happens. I assume that I should see the manual? Gameex does not crash, it just doesn't display the manual.

I don't know how to help you, but if you want me to try something else, I will.

How about Zipping up one of the manuals that does work for you, that way I can say "yes, one works, but the other does not"

You know the PDF file has to match the game name, right?

I renamed your Adventure PDF to 8 Eyes (U).pdf so I could open and view the manual. It launched Adobe Reader okay, but after a few seconds GameEx completely crashed. I am using the latest version of Acrobat. Here's the error log:

Did you guys download the Offline manual viewer from the gameex homepage?

Yes of course... Ages ago. My Super Mario Bros 3 manual views just fine I'm pretty sure. I'll check again when I get home. Unless there's a new version of the plugin I didn't know about, that shouldn't be the issue.

Adultery, yes I'm aware the filenames need to match. You're seeing the same problem I am. The manual starts to open up (I can see the front cover) and then GameEx will crash. Thanks for taking the time and testing it on your machine.

Brian, I downloaded manual viewer as part of the install of GameEx.

What's weird is the manuals will open fine if you use Adobe directly, so it's not a corrupt file problem or anything like that.

I honestly doubt it has anything to do with the black panels around the edges of the manual. They aren't absolute black anyhow... This is more of a problem with GameEx I think... Even if it is a minor flaw, it will most likely be addressed soon since that's a registered version feature.

Just gotta wait til Tom sees it, and can reproduce the error on his machine.

Did you say you were only having issues with these two manuals and not any other ones? Or any other emulators rather?

.:EDIT:. By the way, I wanted to point out that I tested this on an XP machine to reproduce the error, so it isn't directly related to Vista.

I have not tested manuals for any other emulators and I haven't gone through all the of the 2600 manuals. However, I did test manuals for other 2600 games that were made by other companies (ie. Air Lock by Data Age) and they open fine. I definitely show the probably with other manuals for games made by Atari.

I've tested both on XP (laptop) and Vista (desktop). I tried Vista because I thought maybe it was a memory issue with the laptop.

There are only two ways to answer a question like this!

1. What do you take me for, some kind of moron! (angrily)

or

2. no, but I have it now...(sheepishly)

Hahaha!

Actually I went and grabbed a complete set of nes manuals. And tried to view them from gameex. Didnt work

Then I checked the names... They matched.

Then I downloaded Fox it reader then adobe. Didnt help

Then I download the offline manual viewer... then it worked..

And yes I downloaded it during setup as well... Strange... but thats why i asked.

I just updated yesterday, and it was 9.12, so he must have released just to fix this!

Edit: Sorry I didn't notice that the topic went to page 2.
