Due to the amount of reasources that M$ Windows demands users have been opting to Nlite their builds.

This allows you to sripdown your OS to virtual no exras leading to VERY FAST speeds.. However compatability goes out the window.

Of course youll need your OWN legal copy of windows to do this.

Check out Nlite here

Has anyone done this and what are the Best configurations?

Well I haven't screwed around with nLite in some time...and over all I suggest not using it unless you really need to. Nuhi is a great guy and his application is great...but there is a shit load of trial and error...as such I do not feel its a subject that should be discussed here as it will likely lead to more problems and support issues than any of us care to deal with....honestly.

If people are really interested into looking at this as a possibility because their system is under powered...then it should be discussed over at the nLite forums at MSFN where I'm sure some of the old timers still put up with jackasses that can probably assist you quickly and accurately.

I can talk to mhz...who is an old timer there...or was...not sure anymore since I left that scene...but he probably has a decent recommendation for what to strip out of it and what not to. So I'll see if I can snag an nLite config off of him...but really this should be a discussion held over there...and not here.

Perhaps it should but it maybe unlikey that the users over there run gameex. Id think id would be safe to assume everyone here does.. Personallly I have fairly fast pcs.. But am always looking to free up resources. Ive really never tried Nlite before and I might not want to format my cab but there is always the next project.

I tried an nlited install once and it didnt run too well. I didnt try with gameex mind you.

I kind of have to agree with nologic on this one, but you answer most of the questions anyways :P

Even if there was someone with some experience with it here, It would be hard to tell everyone what is best for thier situation, as not everyones cab is the same and someone might require different components on thier cab.

I don't think there's much of a difference between cab's actually. Basically, everyone has the same set of hardware (motherboard, ram, cpu, video card, etc.) and appropriate drivers. That's not the question here. The question is, what is required to get GameEx running with a minimal install of Windows XP. This is not a question of how to configure hardware, it's a question of what components/modules must be installed *minimally* to get GameEx working.

Either way, I think it's something that would be helpful to have answered, but I don't know if it's better here or over there. I've never played with minimal installs (well, I did once, but it's been a long time), so I won't recommend anything. Where ever the thread exists, it's helpful for both communities so it should be linked somehow.

That was the whole point of my original TinyXP post but I guess it got confused into something else. All I wanted to do was to find out how to get GameEx running without Microsoft Jet 4.0 installed. The reason was because a few people have installed TinyXP and can't get GameEx to run on it. They then choose a different FE because of this :(

I am glad I read this topic cause I was gonna ask if there was a way to cut out extras. I am running 64 bit Vista Ultimate 4GB of RAM, MSI P35 Motherboard, E6850 Intel Core Duo (OC'd to 3.6Ghz) XFX 512 MB Vid Card 440 Bus. When running Blitz99 without Game Ex it is a lot faster than it is with. I like running it with Game Ex and having my buttons lighted. I never heard of this proggy and am interested in hearing how other fair with it before I take the plunge.

Well, I was more talking about the software side of things. Maybe an emulator will need this service, or what about those of us that use it for an HTPC that has alot more software than a stripped down cab, as examples. But who knows, I only tried it once so I don't really have any experience with it.

Hi Guys, Long time since I've been around. My current install was done using XP Jacked bare and GameEx after version 5 (5.09 maybe?) does not work with it. After such a long time I figured I'd start from scratch and give my own nLite build a try. I have no idea at this point what broke it but will play around and see what I can come up with. My hardware isn't low end but it's not exactly high end by any stretch either. P4 2.4Ghz, 1G RAM and a 120G HD, ArcadeCGA AGP. I can and have run everything just fine with a full XP install but want to strip out unneeded stuff while still maintaining a majority of the functionality. For me that means networking services and wireless networking are a must as I like to remotely manage my install via RDP or VNC and network shares. I got around this in Jacked by using an FTP server and VNC but want to do more and of course, have full GameEx support. I may be going overboard by trying the nLite route but what the heck.

I forgot some people use GameEx as a dedicated HTPC FE, so you are correct that there are at least 2 configurations. But, The only real difference would be that there would be a few codecs that need to be installed. All of the video related stuff *should* be installable either after the fact or from 3rd parties. However, I agree that it would be nice if there was a list that described each module that is needed and what for.

e.g.,

video codecs.....karaoke, video snaps, etc.

MS Jet DB.........required for any install

whatever else...for some component

anyway, I think you get the idea.
