I like it :) But if it seems a liitle plain to you maybe something like these 3d space invaders will help spice it up :)

I'd personally use a mosaic type background, then maybe use something like an Aqua filter on the Invader to make it 3D and transparent...there is countless ways to approach this...but I wouldn't keep it completely Pixel Art...but I wouldn't stray to far from it ether.
