Hi,

I'm pretty new to GameEx and I was wondering if could keep my ROMs in sub directories (for emulators other than MAME). Currently I have them arranged in directories for each region, e.g.

D:\ROMs\SNES\Europe\, D:\ROMs\SNES\USA\, D:\ROMs\SNES\World\

But GameEx doesn't find them if I store them like that, I've tried setting RomsInFolders to True but that doesn't help, and I've tried a semi-colon seperated list for my ROM path, but gameex really didn't like that.

Am I missing something obvious or is this not possible to do?

BTW - I checked the FAQ and searched the forum before posting!

Thanks!

You can't have Roms in folders sorry. That option is probably there because there was an intention to add support for it, but it's obviously not been added yet

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll "flatten" the folder structure then. All the files have the region in the filename (E), (U), etc. so I shouldn't get a filename clash

If you want a cleaner set with less duplicates, there is a thread here that describes a good procedure for copying those subdirectories on each other in a way that you only have 1 copy of each game from the "best" region. I'm sure you can find it with a quick search!

Ok started doing that, as I'm working with a complete SNES romset I'm going to have 2, 3, even 4 copies of some of the games!!

Is there any clever or quick way to get this down to a single "master" list with USA roms taking priority over europe or jap versions?

UPDATE - posted this before kbenobi posted his reply, ok thanks I'll have a search for the thread with this procedure.

ROM filter = *(U)*.*;*(E)*.*

hope this helps

I just tried that - I still end up with duplicates, i.e. all the Europe and all the USA roms, thanks for the suggestion though!

I think the only way to do this is a MASSIVE rename operation (using a buk rename tool); leave the files in the sub-dirs, remove (*) and [!] from the names, then copy back into the single directory but in the right order (USA, Jap, then Europe) but don't overwrite.

Well that makes since as the E is for europe... Try removing that and the semi colon

Thanks but that only shows the USA roms, I want to show the europe roms IF there isn't a corresponding USA rom.

The problem is compounded when I introduce the World and Jap sets too

Well in the future you can obtain a NO-Intro set instead of a good set... This way you have only the best available dump for each rom and not all the over dumps, bad dumps etc... If a game version doesnt exits it simply includes the Euro or jap.

I'm starting to think the same thing, I wasn't aware of these No-Intro sets before, time to go a downloading...

Sadly I've been unable to find a clean "1 game = 1 rom" no-intro set out there.

I can't belive I'm the only person out there stuggling with these so called "Good" romsets. I'm all for being a completist but this is silly.

i beleive i may of come accross what we want

its called goodmerged romsets

What you want is a NO-INTRO set.

A goodset is all those versions disucussed in the above posts.

A goodmerge set is basiclly a 7zip of lets say chrono trigger... in the 7zip are

chrono trigger !

chrono trigger U

chrono trigger E

chrono trigger J

chrono trigger

chrono trigger [hack]

etc......

EDIT for more info about NO-Intro read this

http://forums.no.intro.free.fr/showthread.php?t=754

your right about the goodmerged "DAMN" and i read the link kinda,,

i have a short attention span , it sounds cool but what do they mean,,is there a romset outhere called no-into or is there a tool being made to seperate them

thanx

D/L the No intro dat... Point to your goodset and use a rommanager to seperate them :)

This is what I've been trying to do

I've not been able to see a way in romcenter (the rommanager tool I like to use) and the no-intro DAT to do what I want (1 game = 1 rom) ??

All I can get the no-intro DAT to do is rename my (U) and (E) roms into (USA) and (Europe) format, not particularly helpful.

There is no way to get ROM Center or ClrMamePro to do what I want - there is no option to pick one game out of many duplicates ...

My ROMs are already split (one ROM per ZIP) so that's not the issue I'm facing

I think manually renaming and deleting is the only option...

Actually you could create a Map file...that only lists the games you want shown...this way you still retain all your roms should you have a change of heart later on.

A Map file is just a standard ACSII text file with the file extension changed from .txt to .map basic format is:

<Rom Name>|<Display Name>

Example:

2020 Super Baseball (1995-02-25)(SNK)[!][NGCD-030].cue|2020 Super Baseball

I think I have a script that will generate a basic Map file for you...somewhere on this forum...hehe good luck. ;)

ive managed to use goodtools to reduce my dupes down to at most 3 from 10 wich got rid of all hacks dupes and crap basicly now all i got is (j) (u) (e) if i could take out the j u e letters i could merge them all into 1 folder in the right sequence and end up with only the best,,,so what program do i use to delete all the letters in brackets

thanx

To remove the (J) etc from the file names I'm using "Bulk Rename Utility" http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php

To do what you want. You have a little work to do.

1. Seperate them to different folders. (I think you do already) Like USA, Euro, Japan, nodumps, etc. Easiest to use a no-intro set to start with.

2. Get a file renamer, remove all the extentions from the file names in all the folders. Your roms should just be the game name.

3. Then drop the euro files into the japan folder. Then the USA files in he Japan folder overwriting all files all the time. That will make the euro (english) files replace any of the same games that are in Japanese. Then when you dump the USA roms in the japanese folder, they will over write any of the same games leaving you with 1 of each game. Mostly USA, and some euro or japanese if there is not a USA version.

4. Run the new set back through romcenter and have it put the correct names (with extensions) back on if you want. You have to decide how you want them to be. Think about how they will match with snaps and etc.

You should decide if you want to keep them in a zip file before you start or just the rom. If you keep them in a zip file, the actual rom names will never be changed. Only the zip file name. Its up to you.

Ill see if I can make some useable dats for romcenter with the emulators I use. I have done that work to all my emulators. :)

Thanks LB11

Your process is pretty much exactly what I was planning to do (but I had forgot the final step to run it back through rom-center to get the "proper" names back)

The only other complication is the ROMs with (V1.0) or (V1.1) in the names, I can tidy these up but it's a matter of deciding which ones to keep. I don't think it's a case of V1.1 is necessarily better than V1.0

Thats why you should run them all through a no intro dat first. It will take the best version for you.
