In main screen on GameEx under MAME I used to have a category of Multiplayer MAME.

This is a great filter. It appears there can only be 19 items in this second layer and so when I add Zinc and Model2 it got pushed off the screen.

is there a way to choose what is actually seen on this screen? I'd like that category back please

thanks

I even went in and hid zinc and spinner games and lgiht gun games hoping to free up more menus but it didn't work.

Is it theme specific? what can I do to re-enable it. I went htrough the setup wizard and it's listed as "show"

anyone

Have you tried changing your theme?

Are you sure you can't scroll the main page? I have more than what will fit on the main page and I can just scroll down. Just a thought.

Id also verify that you have show multiplayer games enabled in the gameex config

I found that in the advanced setup wizard and yes everything was checked.

after that I removed zinc, and spinner, and light gun games. Other than that everything is shown.

Still not there. really weird. menu is small and fits on page completly so scrolling is not an issue.

Any ideas?

Do you have nplayer.ini and is it pointed to in the correct location? If it's not there, then GameEx probably assumes that the game is single player.

Posted

Well, If I sort games by category, choose year or action or whatever, then press "M" i can then scroll down to multiplay but that opton is no longer natively on the main menu

Posted

Hmm.. I my multiplayer categories also dissapeared some time ago, but I haven't looked into it. I just figured it was something I did (and it probably still is). :)

Actually, the categories was shown, but no games inside.

Was nplayer.ini there? If it's not there, then GameEx will have no clue how many players each game has. I suspect that GameEx will default to 1, so even if it's multiplayer, GameEx won't know.

It's not the nplayer.ini categories I have a problem with. I made a custom .ini with my own categories/genres, for example 2, 3 and 4 player multiplayer games. It was working well, but I noticed that the games in those categories dissapeared anywhere between versions 8.84 and 8.88.

I'll admit I made a lot of config changes to GameEx at that time, but this topic reminded me of this issue. Maybe the two things has nothing to do with eachother, but in case they do, at least I know I'm not alone. :)

Do your custom folders show up in the list in GameEx? If so, are you sure they are in the correct MAME32 format? I have downloaded a few MAME32 custom folders and have them loaded on my cab, so I know the feature works. I would make sure your file is formatted correctly. Also, make sure it is in the location you are calling out in the settings (if the list doesn't even show up).

Yeah, I'm fairly sure it's format is correct, as all the categories in the .ini is shown in GameEx, only the multiplayer categories are empty.

[2 Player]
1941
1941j
1943
...

[3 Player]
3stooges
armwar
armwara
...

[4 Player]
aafb
aafbb
aafbc
...

etc.

If I import it in Mame32, it shows up fine. That's what baffled me. :)

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I don't think I'll look into it further though, because all my spare time at the moment is going into starting a company. So as long as our favorite games are playable on the mame cab, I don't think I'll have the time or the energy to fiddle with config's. :)

I do still keep visiting this forum, and I'm amazed by all the activity at the moment, and the level of helpfulness. And I'm curious as to which features are on the way, in future releases. :)

That's cool.

If you want to check one more thing: There is a set of header stuff that goes in front of those categories as I recall. It should be something like

[customicon1...]

[customicon2...]

[root]

game1.zip

game2.zip

game3.zip

[1player]

game4.zip

game5.zip

game6.zip

[2player]

game7.zip

game8.zip

game9.zip

Well, I have a gameEx installed on my desktop as well, I usually test dats and mods there before moving it to my game machine.

it still has ther multiplayer categories despite being up to date on all updates.

is there a way to compare config files or something to show why the two are different?

Thanks

There are a number of tools to do this. I've used BeyondCompare2, but it's not free. There's also a diff feature in NotePad2 (or one of those other notepad replacements).

Now that I look, there is a SourceForge project called WinMerge that looks pretty nice. WinMerge

EDIT: Looks like I was thinking of PSPad as the Notepad replacement that has diff built in. If you don't care about side by side, you could always use MS Word to compare two versions of a document. It's not as nice as side by side, but it works in a pinch.

I don't use the icons, so my .ini is pretty much just categories in [ ] brackets, followed by rom names. The [root] isn't used by GameEx, so that's also out.

I attached my custom categories, if anyone is interested. Just rename to .ini. If anyone imports them, I'd be very interested to hear if you have the same problems with the multiplayer categories.

Okay, I'm busy this afternoon, but I'll try to take a look at it this evening. I'll load it up in my test machine to see if I see the categories pop up. If not, I'll play with one that I know works and see if I can break it.

I grabbed it last night, but I don't know if it had an issue or not. It looks like the following categories have the wrong line end character:

[5. Multiplayer 2 Player]

[6. Multiplayer 3 Player]

[7. Multiplayer 4 Player]

They should have a carriage return + line feed, but they only have a carriage return. Try the attached file.

How the heck could line feed dissapear? :o I've only used strict text editors, like notepad and textpad, for editing the list. It had never occured to me that line feed could go missing.

Does GameEx process the .ini in some way and then save it?

I'll give the fixed .ini a try, thanks.

Edit: I just checked the .ini file, this does not have a (visible) missing linefeed in Textpad, but it does in Notepad. I assume Textpad corrects this upon viewing. But how it could place a CR without the LF, just for these 3 categories, is a mystery to me.

Well, I'll be sure to let you know. My mame cabinet is not in my home, so I don't have the opportunity to try it out at the moment.

It might not be tonight, and maybe not tomorrow, but I should have some time on wednesday. Sorry I can't give you feedback sooner, but thanks for looking at the issue, I'm sure you found the cause. :)

Hey whattayaknow, it did do the trick. :)

Sometimes the problem is obvious, but it takes a new set of eyes to pinpoint the exact cause. So thanks. :)
