OK,

No game CAB yet, this is running on a 60" rear projection and CPU in the media cabinet with other components. running Game-ex, was playing with KB/mouse (wireless logitec) that plug in PS/2 just added tankstick from x-arcade. Love it but unless I remember to unplug the PS/2 mouse before I boot I can use BOTH the trckball and the moouse interchangably UNTIL I start games in MAME then it defers to the mouse and no ability to use the trackball. works fine in Game-ex

In control panel I was hoping to simply disable the mouse but my only option for THAT mouse is UNINSTALL. I really don't want to have to climb around the cabinet to unplug/plug the ps/2 when I wasnt to use trackball. Is there a util that will let me choose which mouse device I want to use in MAME games?

is there someway to disable the mous on-the-fly to make this happen, or am I stuck in an either or situation.

ANYONE?

If I understand correctly, you want MAME to use your trackball rather than the mouse, right? That can be done by configuring MAME correctly to look for the second mouse. In MAME, you can have multiple mice and address them separately. Your mouse is one device, the trackball is another. In MAME, you need to go to the general controls section and change your settings to use the trackball (probably mouse2) rather than the mouse (probably mouse1).

i will try that this evening. I figured it was something simple like that. x-arcade suggested i unplug main mouse then start up pc. this would set trackball as mouse 1, then restart with both plugged in, great except the tankstick will not always be plugged in so I would have to do this routine everytime. your suggestion works because only in MAME will I need this distinction. when i plug in the device, windows will always call it mouse 2 so that should work. very cool. I will try that and get back to you.

thanks

I'm using Mame32 0.120u1 and can't make that happen. I have gone to general config settings and there is an option to change the trackball to keyboard/joystick/mouse but nothing for trackball or mouse 2

I tried changing mouse to mouse 2 in all the ini files but eveidently this is either a 0 or 1 not 1 or 2.

anyone else with ideas on how to get trackball to work mame. I don't want to have to unplug the mouse everytime I use the trackball

I wouldn't edit the files by hand, at least not to start. I would personally load up a game in MAME, hit TAB, and go to General Options - Player 1 Controls. Find the Mouse stuff near the bottom (should be 6 lines for Analog, Inc, Dec and X,Y). Now, select the analog for x and move your tank stick to left or right. It should pop up with something like 'MOUSE_1_X'. Now, if you want to see if MAME is recognising different mice with different numbers, try the y axis with the mouse. It should give you something like 'MOUSE_2_Y' or something like that. If it reports the same number, that shouldn't be a problem. If it doesn't take the trackball, then I would try unplugging the mouse and restarting the PC prior to trying again (just to see if it works). There may be an option in MAME to enable multiple mice. If so, it has to be enabled.
