Hi there...

I just got my first MAME cabinet last weekend.. It came with a very old version the command line MAME and glauncher front end.

I built out a new PC this week and wanted a more modern front end so I purchased GameEx.

I've installed everything but I can not figure out how to assign my buttons..

The controls are the Xarcade controls but they were taken out of the stock Xarcade box and put in my Atari cabinet..

Not all buttons on both sides were installed in this cabinet as it was intended for classics only. There are 3 buttons to the side of each joystick (2) the player 1 and 2 buttons and 1 coin slot is wired up to player 1 button 6..

Anyway, I can't find where I need to define my buttons inside GameEx or Mame32.

I'm sure there is a simple solution but it's wearing me out.. Ive been digging around for hours now. I've been through the setup wizzards and the advanced configuration and just cant find it..

I would really appreciate some help..

Thank you in advance.

When you launch MAME you could load a game and press TAB (I think?)... That's how to set up your controller for all MAME games anyways.

Adultery is correct about MAME press TAB and choose input settings.

Gameex advanced configuration>input settings> you can tell it you have an Xarcade..

I have one.. It works good... Though not good as my hand made cp..

Sweet thanks !

I have another couple of questions though..

Player X Coin is defined in each games settings rather than in general settings. Do you really need to go in and configure each game or is there a file I can edit somewhere that says for all games Coin Slot X is this button or key ?

And

When you are in a game playing and you want to get back to the main GameEx screen what do you push? Or where can you define that?

Thanks again for the help..

You can define Global controls... for all keys.. I beleve its called Input general.

Also look for OTHER CONTROLS.. in here look for UI CANCEL.. you can define this to a sigle key or muliple keys..

This will exit MAME... Hence bring gameex back into focus...

Do your self a favor.. Get mame going first... Then setup gameex..

Ok.. Thanks guys...

Its really all about not trying to tackle everything at once... It narrows down trouble shooting...

Please by all means if you have questions just ask...

In case you missed it (which you probably haven't), the coin and start controls are not in the general commands under P1 or P2, they are under the bottom menu (I forget what it is...others perhaps). Anyway, look around and you should be able to get everything going!

Hey guys.. I have to tell you the support on here is amazing.. I greatly appreciate the help.

I have MAME32 working correctly right now. Thanks for the help there.

When I went into the GameEx advanced configruation and tried to select the Xarcade.. It's not an option. The only thing that is in the drop down is All Attached Devices.

I really like the Media Center look but it lists all the games regardless if I have them or not. Is there a way to turn that off so it only shows what I actually have? I changed to the simpler menu and it only shows what I have..

Thanks again for all your help.. Finding help is not easy on most forums these days.. I'm glad I donated to such a great community...

I had been to the menus in the pictures.. In the drop down where it shows your Saitek P990 the only option there for me is All Attached Devices or a blank. Nothing for Xarcade. I seem to be able to navigate ok so it may not be an issue...

I turned off the game launcher mode and went back to the MCE style and there are about 100 categories that are labeled .001 .002 .003 etc.. Any idea what those are?

Whats the easiest way to have it scan for games when I add or remove them? The only way I've run across yet is in Advanced Configuration and delete all game info... Then restart it and it does a search. I'm sure theres a better way that I'm not seeing.

One last thing and I promise I will try to not bug you for the rest of the day...

How can I disable the page when you launch a game and it has the name of the game the year and CPU info ?? When the screensaver kicks on it will launch a game and just stick at that screen.

Thanks again..

It's no bother come back as often as you want.

For the XARCADE enable direct input and slikstick support.

What issues are you having with the xacarcde?

My saitek is my gamepad...its USB--disregard that.

As far as adding games just upadate the games list...this is for mame... for emus just add the roms.. it will dosiplay them based on your roms filter.

As far as the info page goes there is a way to disable it im 98% sure but off had I cannot think of it... Maybe someone else will chime in.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy gameex as the rest of us do! :)

I'm not having any issues navigating around GameEx so I suppose I dont need to worry about it... I opened up notepad and pressed all mu buttons and joystick directions and it's just keys on the keyboard they are mapped to, so maybe I just leave it as is..

How do I update the game list? If I drop some new zip files in my mame32\roms directory what is the recomended procedure to make sure they get noticed by GameEx?

Any reason why you are using Tom's old "Advanced Configuration" versus HK's "Setup Wizard"?

@ lingpanda---Old habits die hard.. Ive been using gameex for a very long time.

@javo-- Personally Id use a fresh gameex config.. In the C:\Program Files\GameEx\CONFIG

there is a file called gameex.default .. Id rename the gameex ini to some thing else then rename the gameex.default

to gameex

And start over...

Sorry but it would probably be the quickest...

Being a newbie Im sure you dont have tons of emus configured yet. Id go this route.

Then how would you recommend me get it set back up?

The Advanced Configuration or the Basic or Advanced Wizzard?

I'm only concerned with MAME32 for now... Doing this wont effect my MAME32 player control settings will it?

No it wont affect mame... Mames settings are stored in the default.cfg in the CFG folder in the MAME directory.

Id suggest using the advanced gameex configuration... as it is what im used to..

Though HK setup wizard is very good and lets you confuure more that 40 emulators and reorder them.. I still just use toms

like I said before old habits die hard... you will get it going no matter which route you choose.. and we will help along the way.

Happy gaming

He might not even be seeing the option to update the rom list. You have to enable that in the advanced config if it is not enabled.

Then you will see the update rom list at the bottom of the mame screen in gameex. Its the last option.

I wasn't aware that the Setup Wizard had ALL of the options in it. I thought if you needed to edit new features, you had to use the Advanced Config Wizard (like I don't think eBooks are in HK's tool ATM).

eBook is in there. Tom generally adds the new options into SetupWizard.xml when he adds them into GameEx. Not all options are in Setup Wizard but I don't remember which ones arn't in there. Most of them are but options like custom text arn't.

It's just a matter of preference which configurator you use, I like the Setup Wizard for searching for features or sorting and organising my emulators when I add a new one to the list. But the Advanced Config is easier to access when already inside GameEx and on a low resolution cab it also makes sense.

I noticed alot of the oldskool GameEx users prefer the Advanced Config over the Setup Wizard because thats what they're used to. I'm obviously more used to the Setup Wizard so that's what I use and I generally give support based on that. If someone is looking for an option I think it makes sense to use the search feature of the Wizard.

Good points. I've been primarily using GameEx on my cab with a TV as the display which has piss poor resolution. I wasn't able to read most of the menus easily on the Setup Wizard, so I usually just use the Advanced Config Wizard instead. But, it's definitely true that moving emu's around is a lot easier in the Setup Wizard!
