I have an issue, specifically with one game (Asteroids) that the sound messes up when I play it. The sound starts out normal but then without notice it will go real loud and distorted. It may sometimes go in and out from normal to distorted while I play. If I run the game from a command prompt using MAME then it works fine.

I have replaced the on board (SoundMax) sound with a Sound Blaster PCI 512 card and still get the same results. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, I was using 115 of MAME and upgraded to 118 (latest build) and still get the same result. GameEx is up to date also...

Thanks

Well do you have another machine to try this on? Do you have your volume keys mapped to your controls? I cannot think off had why It would do this.. Is this the only game this happens on?

Do you have any other switches defined in the gameex advanced mame settings?

Ill think of more stuff. Till then can you respond to the other q's

Thank you for your response. I am not sure why, but when I turn down the hardware acceleration on the sound card it seems to have fixed it. I had tried 2 different cards but I guess it may be some other conflicting reason with other hardware I guess. I could not duplicate it on another machine but as long as it is fixed....

Thanks again for the reply.

From the release notes of 118u2

NOTE: If you are experiencing sound stuttering due to not being able to run your display at >60Hz, please give the -speed option a try. You should be able to run MAME at a small emulation speed decrease in order to get the game under your monitor's refresh rate.

Before doing that though, try using the -d3d option instead of -ddraw (you can set this in mame.ini as well) Eg.
