Hey Tom just tried the new ebook reader and not having any luck. I have it enabled and set my paths correctly as GameEx can see my comics, but when I try to actually view them I get a progress bar for 20 to 30 seconds and then GameEx stops the progress bar and goes back to the selection of comics without letting me read the one I selected. I read the log file and it says "The process cannot access the file 'C:\Program Files\GameEx\DATA\tmppdf-5.png' because it is being used by another process.". I tried to open the file tmppdf-5.png with adobe imageready and it looks like the front cover of the comic I was trying to view but I don't know what could be causing it to hang. I do have adobe reader speed launch in my windows startup folder, but I don't think it uses pngs. Im not sure what process could be hanging this up. My log file is below.

Thanks

Jay T

A really handy tool that I use all the time is Unlocker and you can right click on that file and it will tell you what process has a lock on it.

I sent Tom some code on how to deal with PDF's one page at a time. You have to load the png into memory so the image doesn't get locked. It's how I deal with locked images in CPWizard for my manual viewer. I also recently sent him some web pages on how to deal with locked images as lingpanda was having a problem viewing images in CPWizard when running alongside GameEx which was locking them in the Game Extender I believe.

Good idea but no luck. It returned a no locking handle found message, this time on tmppdf-6.png. The log is below. i tried rebooting my system as well but had no luck there either. I would love to get this resolved but I am flying out of town tomorrow for a 10 day work trip and will not have access to my computer during that time. Maybe someone else can help resolve it in the meantime if they have the same issue.

GameEx is not even trying to do anything with the images at that stage, its just trying to delete any previous tmppdf*.png files. Its failing before its even loading images.

So I suggest a reboot then trying to delete all those tmppdf.png files files from the data folder. Maybe its some kind of NTFS issue?

Quite often Anti-virus applications lock files when they scan them when you access the file if you have "live scanning" enabled. I've had issues with this in the past. Unlocker will only show a file that is locked at the time, and anti-virus software will only lock the file during a scan.

JT,

I would be helpful if you can get to me one of the comic books that is not working

Thanks.

Tom

Actually that error is misleading. Its actually failing viewing the comic, the images were created ok. The viewer is erroring, and its just failing when its trying to clean stuff up.

Im releasing another version which will have error logging on the actual viewer.

I've just released 8.82 which should now fix any image locking issues.

Thanks.

Thanks Tom,

I am out of town now and away from my home computer and comics, but I will try it out when I get home in a couple of weeks.

Headkaze, the link Tom showed above will get you started. I can't tell you exactly where to get the real comics but you can sometimes find them in the usual places, such as torrent sites and usenet and such.

OK, I'm back home and have tested the reader and am happy to report that it works, however it took over 2 minutes to load a comic and a minute and a half for another one. I don't know if this is normal or if its just because I have a not so cutting edge system or not but I thought I would report it. I am going to update GameEx on my cab next and see how it runs on an even slower system. I'll report back and let you know how it goes.

Ok tested on the cab and the same files took 65 seconds and 45 seconds respectively which is much better. I don't have AV software on my cab nor do I have a lot, and I mean a lot of the software I have on my PC. I'm guessing I have something on here that slows the process down somehow but I'm not sure what it is. BTW most of my comics are in cbr format. I'll look and see if I can find one in cbz format and see if it opens any quicker.

Tried a comic in cbz format and it took a minute and 24 seconds on my main pc. I think I'll chalk it up to just having slow computers. Time for an upgrade.

GameEx has to convert pages to image format before it displays so this is probably what is taking the time. I'm not sure how many pages it generates at a time but the higher the quality pdf file the longer it takes to generate each page.

BTW Tom, I'm not bitching about it. I think the new reader looks great once it opens, and seems as easy if not easier to use than Comic book reader. I was just wondering if it was just me or if anyone else was having this problem.

Yeah, I kind of figured that might be the problem. Most of my comics vary between 10 and 30 megs in size, with a few I've seen up in the 60 meg range. I think it just depends on the resolution they were scanned in.
