Hey, first post! I've been looking around trying to find a nice front end, and I really like the looks of GameEx, but I'm having a lot of trouble getting it working on Windows 98 SE (Fresh copy). Running the GameEx installer it managed to download and install Windows Media Player, MDAC, .net Framework etc fine, but in the actual installation, right near the end it gave me an error "Unable to register the DLL/OCX: LoadLibrary failed; code 31. A device attached to the system is not functioning." Finding no way around this error I simply clicked ignore, and then it gave me 4-5 errors in a row, all point to an error in mscoree.dll. I've tried reinstalling .net Framework to no avail, and am stuck (the log is blank). Any ideas?

Check that you have the most current drivers for your OS... This might be a little diffacult...

Good luck

You need to post your log file (c:\Program Files\GameEx\LOG\) containing the error if you want better help than just generic "check your system" responses. Most of the time, you will be able to get a response within minutes of posting the error!

But that's not my system that it's referring to. So bizarre. The main difficulty with drivers etc is that this is a Dell PC built for windows XP, but I'm running 98 on it. I was able to get drivers for everything, apart from the sound card in the PC, so I installed a separate PCI one for that. I'm pretty stumped, because it was actually loading to the registration screen when the PC was running 98, but it would freeze when it tried to actually go into the front end. But now with second edition, I've go no clue, I'm thinking I might have to bite the bullet and use XP...thanks for the replies so far though!

That doent look good..

Tell gameex in the advanced config not to change resolutions...

Also disable your ESC key exit in the config... Just in case there is a stuck key or somthing

I can't get into the setup to even do that :P. I've already tried reinstalling windows 98 over top of it, but I'm loathe to go to XP. The main thing for me is boot times, are they comparable? Thanks for the help so far!

the gameex advanced config is not within the gameex app itself.. Its a seprate EXE located the in programs group on start menu..

Your very welcome....

BTW what are your system specs

Actually, I've found that for pretty much any system, Win98 runs slower than WinXP. As long as you have a minimal system that can boot XP, I would DEFINITELY go that route. Also, the boot time for XP is highly dependent on what software you are running. If you have a bunch of junk loading up, it will take a while to boot. If you choose to shell your machine to boot straight into GameEx, it boots pretty quickly.

I can't run any program in the folder, even uninstall! All my other programs work fine, it's pretty weird. At this point I think I'm just going to give in, and install windows XP, if I have any more problems I'll be sure to post back here, but thanks anyways, out.

Hi. I was just reading an earlier post that Tom replied to and it seems the gameex log is reporting 0 Mb memory available on your graphics card, so i'd look along the graphics card/driver side of things.

Another Thing is you say your running 98Se...But you have 3gigs memory and dualcore cpus.. 98 does not support more than a gig...let alone dualcore cpus.

This might also be the root of your problems

No I mean, that's not my computer in the log, I've got a single core 2.8 celeron d, and 512 mb of ram. That log is really not mine! Haha, in any case I've made the move to windows XP, seems to be working just fine (not really that much longer loadup). I absolutely love GameEx, will probably be donating shortly, but one quick question. With the instantsheller program found on this site, or through different means is there any way to have an animated XP boot logo? Thanks

Check out the BootLogo program, it allows you to create a boot logo with animated bar. It includes a Mame logo in the archive.

Hi, just to clear things up, thats the default log included with gameex install. Its actually the log of my development pc.

Not many folks have a quad core Xeon, and 4GB Ram :)

The 0mb video memory is because it was last run under a remote desktop session.
