Yo guys! ;)

I have just finished my first arcade machine and all the small bugs are starting to get ruled out, the machine almost runs perfectly now.

But one thing that always annoyed me a bit, was that you get to see the windows desktop before it loads GameEx. Then I found an application called InstantSheller that could be able to hide the OS completely, so that you actually â??bootâ? directly into GameEx.

Have any of you guys tried this? I am asking because I read that it was supposed to work with the command line version of mame, and I am using mame32

Furthermore it is said that it has only been tested on an XP Pro machine and I am running XP Home.

So what do you say? Impossible?

I have used it. On xp pro. it changes a few things in registry.

What you want to do is change the shell

run regedit

goto hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon

you will see a key that says "SHELL" with the value of explorer.exe

modify this data to the path of the gameex.exe c:\program files\gameex\gameex.exe (or wherever you installed it)

Now windows will boot into gamex you will have no startmenu.

FAIRWARNING---Alot of people complain that when they close gameex they want the explorer back. To do this in gameex advanced config\launch on exit- put explorer.exe now if you exit gameex it will run explorer.

you can always CTRL+ALT+DEL click file new task.type EXPLORER.exe and get the startbar in can you mess something up.

Have fun and good luck

On xp mediacenter edition INSTANTSHELLER will NOT run at all. Ive never tried on HOME edition.

It should run fine on any version of XP. Ive had no problems running it on XP Media Center. When I coded it I tested it on that.

Cool... I wonder why Ive had problems?!? Ive tried on two machines running mediacenter all pro have been fine. Oh well

It says somting about a jit debugger and errors out. I'll post a screen shot later.

I apologize for bumping an old topic I didn't want to create a new one. Anyway I'm just messing around with the Instant Sheller program and everything seems to working great so far! I have a question though I noticed upon Windows starting up it shows the mouse cursor and hourglass it also does this upon shutting down. I do have the sheller set to show a little dot instead of the cursor I also tried running nomouse during launch all that does is show a minimized does window and stops GameEx from loading until I go into Task Manager to end task on nomouse any ideas? I'm pretty lost here :)

I think this is the ultimate sheller guide - read the section by Brian Hoffman

I hope it helps!
