Hey fellow mame enthusiasts! :P

I have just built my first arcade capinet, and need some help on an error I am getting from GameEx.

In total I have about 130 games in my game list in game ex, but some of them wonâ??t start correctly, Iâ??m just getting a black screen and that windows â??doohâ? sound, then I am thrown back to the gameex game menu.

To isolate the problem I tried to run one of the affected games directly from mame32 and then there are no problems at all. To further investigate the problem I started gameex and ran the screen saver to get a idea of how many of the games that wore affected by the error. I estimate about 30 of the games are affected but only if I run them from gameex.

I had a sneaking suspicion that a error message was hiding behind the gameex window so I ran the â??run last gameâ? bat file in gameex and bingo, this awful error message was thrown in my face: Error: unknown option -artwork.

So what the hell does that mean? <_<

I am fairly new to Gameex so it could just be me doing something wrong, but then again, why only with some of the games?

Any help gladly appreciated

Hi. I'm using the command line version of MAME and i always get that message (in a windows command line box) but it has never caused any problems and i don't think it's the reason for the roms not playing in GameEX. Maybe check your Basic MAME & Advanced MAME settings. No doubt someone on the forum will be able to help you.

artwork is the command to display the bezel art in MAME. If you don't have the artwork, it will thow an error. There was a change in the artwork system a few revs ago that resulted in having to download new artwork files. Try disabling artwork (remove the command line argument) and try it again.

It would be (i think) in your mame.ini or mame.cfg file in your mame directory.

First things first. Remove the command from the 'Run Last Game' batch file and verify that fixes the problem. Next, if that works, you will have to find where it is being called. It could be in the MAME.ini file (as iano suggested), or perhaps in the GameEx MAME command line options.

Hmm.. Doesnâ??t look like it, there are no files by those names in the mame32 directory. Doesnâ??t this confic have something to do with GameEx and not mame?

mame.cfg is where the default controls are stored as far as I can remember. The files you need to check are the MAME.ini file in your mame directory and the GameEx.ini file (best viewed through the advanced configuration wizard).

In the command line version of MAME you have to type 'create config' i think or something along those lines. Don't know what the story is with MAME32 though. No the config thing has to do with MAME (not GameEX).

Don't you have to switch this off in GameEx? I thought it was a command line argument sent from GameEx when a certain option was enabled. Bezels maybe?

Okay I cheeked for the MAME.ini file en the meme directory, but itâ??s not there. The closest match I could find to the MAME.ini was a file named Mame32.ini, it has some reference to the artwork path but no -artwork argument.

As for the GameEx.ini I found it, but I canâ??t find any -artwork commands in there.

Now for the good news

When I removed the -artwork from the Run Last Game bat file I was able to run â??non workingâ? games from there. But if I run a working game from Gameex and then one of the â??non workingâ? games again, the Run Last Game bat file has the -artwork argument replaced and therefore the game is not working again. I guess this is loaded into the file because of that freakinâ?? -artwork setting I canâ??t findâ?¦. Any ideas?

In mame settings in the gameex advanced configuration remove the artwork path.

Gameex builds the commandline based on those inputs.

Just FYI, but the 'Run Last Game' batch file is what was last run in GameEx, it is not where GameEx determines the commandline for the next game. In other words, changing the commandline in the batch file will not change anything in the long run. This step is just a debugging step meant to determine what the problem is.

QFT

Kaze hit this right on. GameEx will always send this argument when launching MAME with Display Bezels switched 'on'... I'm pretty certain of this.
