Can't browse roms with videos

xvid (stable) installed by itself:

can browse games with videos

screensaver with videos displays a black screen

ffdshow (stable) installed by itself or in conjunction with xvid:

gameex freezes when browsing games with videos

screensaver with videos works.

any ideas?

ffdshow is the codec used so gameex screensaver will work. didn't work when i just had xvid installed.

I wish you wouldnt say things like it worked last night in 8.64, blaming the problem on a new specific GameEx version. Thats one of the few things that ticks me off, when people report bugs about specific versions when there not specific to the version. This is most deffinitly a codec issue. I've experienced this with newer versions of FFDSHOW that dont work with GameEx.

If your not sure, or you dont know what your talking about just say so, we're all very helpfull here.

i edited out versions even before i saw a reply as i had not come to my own conclusion, so you missed the edit i guess.

i am a brand new gameex user. i am not familiar w/ how it all works.

i do not post these as tried and true bugs. i only try and be as specific as possible. i honestly had everything working 100% under 8.62. Since the recent upgrades, i have had these issues. 8.24 and (maybe 8.62) for me played videos when browsing AND in the screensaver with just the xvid codec.

i do not mean harm to you... i know you spend a lot of time on this program and when i post something that you may think is placing immediately blame on you, i can understand your defensive approach. i develop for a company and have people do the same things that aren't familiar with the ins and outs of a program in development.

No problem, sorry if I was a little harsh. Anyway I suggest uninstalling all your codecs, and installing the version of FFDSHOW on the actual GameEx site.

What is more helpful with versions is saying the version you upgraded from. That way I know what has changed in between. The video code did change but not in the last several versions. I always assume folks who report an issue are using the latest version, if not the first thing I ask them to do is install it.

the exact version from your site works with xvid and allows videos to be played in both the game list and screensaver!

i must have gotten a different/newer stable build elsewhere that doesn't work with gameex. (20061201)

a couple things i've noticed with ffdshow versus xvid codec installed on my system (1gb ram 3.4ghz p4 un-bloated):

i have problems with ffdshow playing the mame videos that are available at most places. xvid codec plays them all fine. ffdshow will chop up the sound/video and cause them to go out of sync and/or pause for 5+ seconds randomly throughout the video.

so currently i've just disabled the screensaver until xvid will work with it or i can find updated mame videos that work better with ffdshow within gameex. when playing the same videos with ffdshow outside of gameex, they seem to work ok, but i haven't seen many others post similar problems, so it could somehow be this system (using windows media player 6.4 or any other players that use system codecs instead of built-in ones).

in each case, the ONLY video codecs were either xvid (1.2) or ffdshow (version from your site) and no other video codecs (besides default winxp ones) were installed.

NOTE: does not seem to happen with non-mame game videos within gameex. many of the videos are even all from the same source. if i get spare time i'll try and figure out what the heck is the problem, but until then XviD with no screensaver is a quick and easy fix on my end.
