29th July, 2007 - GameEx 8.63

New GameLauncher mode feature.

This feature completely changes the way the user interface works is controlled and displays. It puts GameEx into a simple game mode, with simpler menus, simpler navigation, sinply navigating through your available game lists. Many of the menus are disabled by turning on this setting, and only games lists are available. Navigation is much simpler with paging by pressing left or right, and button 1 and 2 navigate the available lists. Button3 launches game. Recommended for simple cab setups, where you want to lock things down or its for young children. It also supports low resolutions such as 320X240.

Small screensaver stability fixes

GameEx setup will now automatically detect old version of MDAC (Micrsoft data access components), and download and install latest version. This is for Windows 98 and Windows 2000.

It wont be for everyone, but this feature, turns GameEx into an almost completely different front end.

Its like the original GameLauncher app, but with the power and advanced configuration of GameEx.

I already credit Dave Dribin for helping inspire me with GamEx, but hats off to the original game launcher.

I'am fortuante enough to have two cabs so I'll see how it goes. Ive toyed with flat menus but as you say there are alot of features...Always a good thing But I donot use them all. ;)

I think Ive even tried that frontend.. but after finding yours I ve stopped looking all together :)

Awesome Tom. I've commented before that I used to use Gamelauncher and used your TS gamelauncher tools to help me set it up. I can't wait to give this a try. I've wanted to ask you in the past if you ever had any plans to make a simpler front end much like gamelauncher but was afraid I'd insult you since you've put so much work into GameEx. Looks like we have the best of both worlds now.

Thanks

Nasty bug encountered

When Gameex installed the new update, I lost the words on the start menu - emulated games.

When I ran Gameex config, I found that all 39 of my emulators had been wiped out. As I can't find where gameex has a restore feature I am restoring them all by hand Hope I can remember what my various commands were. had a lot of things running under Gameex that i haven't seen on forum(Flash Games, Spectravision). Also changed my settings for karaoke. Didn't seem to effect anything else in multimedia.

Oh well

This may be exactly what I've been hoping for! I have a simple cabinet that only has a couple buttons (it's a 2 player racing cabinet with only 1 button each). This may make navigating through menus much easier! Thanks Tom

Im sorry to hear that, but Im surprised I've never heard of such a problem, and I doubt its specfic to this version. GameEx does make a backup of the configruation file in the Config folder when it installs, so check that out.

Posted
my config was wiped up with the upgrade, too.

however, i had the .upgradebackup.ini file and just restored it.

Im not sure I believe this is not user error, there's never been a problem such as this with GameEx, and nothing has changed that would affect this. I believe the report by the other user was purely a one off.

If this is the case with your setup why did you not report the problem when you submitted the (false) bug report about attract mode in the very same version of GameEx? Please justify yourself..

(false) bug report? i am reporting what is happening when gamex gets updated. i do not touch my system at ALL except for gameex updates. when i went from 8.62 to 8.64 i had screensaver problems, so i touched my system to see if i could fix it (xvid/ffdshow changes).

i didn't think of reporting that as i had a backup made by the upgrade already and didn't think about it until i saw someone else have the problem. i was more worried about the attract mode (false) bug.

Hi Tom,

Not complaining, just reporting a bug. Think that GameEx is excellent. If I didn't i wouldn't have donated over double the amount you suggested. Did go back and look at my backyup update ini when it happened and it had went back to the original. Haven't done anything new to Gameex in days but the autobackups and play games. Could have been anything, maybe i did something without knowing. Just posted the bug in case. I read a little more of the forums everyday to get a better feel for the frontend. Having beta tested for a lot of front ends, I think Gameex is the best ever and it only gets better with each update.

Thanks for your support, and no problem, I just need a few beers, or a good lay, one or the other will do :)

I'm having a similarly strange issue after updating. Not sure what I've done to muck things up (I'm still new at all this), but for somereason now when I start game ex, it loads up and then minimizes automatically. if I click on it in the taskbar it comes back fine, and everything seems to work, but if I leave it for awhile it freezes up in a black screen (I think it's the screensaver mode, but I could be wrong), and then in task manager it reads as using 99% of the cpu...

Just ignore this, if I've got no idea what I'm talking about, I don't recall making any changes to my game ex settings, and this didn't seem to happen before the update... I dunno...

Anyways, thanks heaps tom for Game Ex... As they say here in Australia...

You're a bloody legend mate!

A reminder to everyone if your having issues please post your logs.

Whops, sorry I forgot to do that... I've managed to get around the Attract/Screensaver hang by just turning it off. But GameEx still automatically minimizes to the task bar for some reason after it starts up...

Here is my log (from before turning off the Attract/Screensaver)... I don't think the log is complete because I have to restart the computer everytime.

Anyway, here's what's happening again: After waiting 1min the screen goes black (attract screen option) and then if I move the mouse, the screen comes back on but everything is fozen... I've managed to get the task manager up once and gameEx was using 99%cpu. most of the time though, I can't even get taskmanager going... I just have to restart :(

hope this helps...

Sould like this is a codec issue. Im expecting you have the official DivX codec installed, that would cause the minimize, theres more info about it on the site FAQ. This mimimize is caused when the startup is video is playing by the DivX Codec.

I suggest you uninstall your codecs, and install a different codec pack such as the FFDSHOW one on the site.

Your saying this worked in a previous version? That's odd, or did you change codecs or startup video?

Let it go into attract/screen savermode. Move you mouse...When it comes back up with the blank screen press ALT+TAB...Does that bring gameex back?

Nope :( it's truly stuck... just have to restart the computer. which prevents me from getting any log info that would be useful.

It seems as though someone else on here is describing exactly the same symptoms in this thread ...

http://www.gameex.info/forums/index.php?sh...art=#entry24522

only difference is I had my screen settings set to blank screen, and no video...

And also I'm having that strange thing where GameEx minimizes to the task bar after starting up. When I Alt+TAB to switch to it, it just minimizes again. But if I click on it with the mouse it comes up....

I've been messing with it a bit, and just once (and never again even with the same settings), when I started GameEx, instead of the loading screen, it started up playing one of the movies (zoolander) in my movie folder upsidedown. when I hit ESC it went right to the GameEx start screen... Weird.

Posted

Go to Start->Programs->GameEx->Setup Wizard->Custom->Video/Movie Settings and make sure your Startup Video/Dir is empty. See if that solves GameEx minimizing on startup. I have a feeling it's your video codec causing this issue.

Tom:

This seems like the same error that was present about a week ago. When Gamex boots screen loads and is rotated 90 degree's, when certain mame previews in the top left window go to play the windows resize and drop down to the task bar. Seems like a resolution issue. I wil post logg as soon as I can.
