Goto control panel and / Game controllers and press a button. It will light up and tell you the number.

In gameex enable custom controls Click edit and program what you want the button functions to be.

Sorry I was refering to the Windows control panel. In there you have a game controllers applet that lets you manage your controllers. When you press a button a light in the applet usually will flash telling you what button number you are pressing.

Now that you know which buttons are 1,2,3 etc you can goto the gameex config and tell it wich buttons you want to be select and back and enter and so fourth.

And dont worry we were all N00bs here at some point... You gotta start somewhere I never realized why N00bs get such a bad rap.

Anyways your questions are always welcome here.

Hope this helps

Directional buttons SHOULD work right off the bat. In the input settings there is a dropdown box that will let you choose which pad gameex will use. Try that.

*Also if your gammepad had analog sticks like playstation make sure thos dont control gameex up and down) I had a controller that If I pressed a button It would make the analog stick the D-pad*

I have entered in there -all devices- and -axis pad- and neither select anything. i did have analog sticks with these controllers that i hacked off which controlled up and down in mame, so im wired through my d-pad now and dont get up and down or any of it.. any suggestions.. thanks again for the help

Ok if Iam understanding correctly you hacked your gamepad can are using it for your arcade controls? and before MAME used the analong part for up and down etc... but you had to of course use the dpad. Maybe if the controller came with proper driver software you can tell it to use the DPAD as the default for directional control.. I have a feeling like MAME, Gamex is waiting for the analog to be used.

Check the driver. And if possable see if a button on the controller it self will let you toggle between the two.

I use an IPAC and It was a great investment.

Yeah it sucks that im cheap. It has a button thats labeled game and set. Does that sound like it? I flipped them without rebooting or anything and just wondered..

I just replyed and I cannot see it. Oh well

Whch controller are you using?

Did hitting the switch fix the problem?

There is nothing wrong with being cheap. I used to you a keyboad hack I put together and It was a pian in the ass and never worked the way I needed it to.

Also I am still using a HARDDRIVE/MOUSE hack for my spinner..It works well and saved me 80 bucks.

Ipac came out with a 36 dollar version and between the keyboards I broke and the headache cause it was well worth it and it works very well.

As far as the spinner goes I cannot see myself spending 80 bucks... Same for the trackball.

Another option you might consider would be to use XPadder to remap the joystick inputs to keyboard inputs. If you do this, then it doesn't matter what the joypad shows up as in windows as long as it does. All you have to do is set up the controllers so that whatever button you want to do what sends that key (as defined in the GameEx faq).

For instance:

Joypad..........GameEx

---------------------------

Up................Up Arrow

Down............Down Arrow

Left...............Left Arrow

Right.............Right Arrow

Button1.........Enter (or 1)

Button2.........Backspace

Button3.........Alt

Button4.........Control

etc...

cool. ill try the xpadder.. brian can you shoot me a link to the harddrive/mouse hack? im interested in learning about it.,

Thanks so much for all of your helps.

cheers

Well i tried to change it using xpadder and also trying to figure out how to configure the d-pad to work with mame32 frontend with no luck still. I can see how i map them in xpadder but i guess it just defaults to analog sticks to select up and down. hmmm.. still trying

In case it's not obvious: XPadder

Well assuming you get the POV hat to be UP DOWN LEFT RIGHT arrows keys. in mame the you press TAB this brings up config window. Goto input settings, ALL games/ goto P1 up press enter and It will wait for you to prees a key to map p1 up to. in your case it will more than likely be up arrow.

So taking it one step at a time. Configure the Analog stick to be up,down, left right arrows using XPADDER.

Then configure MAME.

BTW mame defaults for p1 are up down left right arrows. Since you are going to use xpadder to map joystick buttons to key presses. I would leave out the -joy switch in the mame config. Since now its essentially a kb.

Hope this makes since.

Thats the wierd thing is that i cant configure the analog stick seeing i didnt map that. i hope these controllers will work. that xpadder is wierd to use and im probably not doing it right or the driver that microsoft installed for me for these joysticks are defaulting it to analog.. anyone have this problem? or is it just me?

yeap that was the easiest way to get her going XPADDER and then GameEX.. i just wish i had the money to get past that screen on startup. I will probably just end up frontending it with MAME32. Thanks all for the great fast help

Glad to hear. Btw, did you end up with XPadder, settings in GameEx, or something different? Just curious.
