I haven't used the auto update feature before, but when I tried it on my driving cabinet the other day, I experienced an unhandled error which crashed GameEx. The error was not logged. The message appeared in a standard Windows error dialog (General Protection Fault type). The message said something about I/O blah blah, but I'm sure it was due to the connection timing out. Maybe I'm the only one with poor connectivity on my wireless network, but it seems like if the connection fails, GameEx should realize the problem and cancel the update with a notice of some kind.

The auto update in my cab crashes all the time too, but I've chalked it up to having only 256 megs of ram in its computer. Not sure what error message I get but when I do a manual download and install, everything seems fine. My cab is hard wired.

Yeah, I've been manually updating up to now also and it works fine. But, since there is an automatic update feature, I figured I should at least give it a try ;)

My auto update has been crashing for the last 4 or 5 versions but although I get an error the update still carries on in the background, the message appears just befoer the white downloading latest update screen appears, it's some sort of IO error I think can't remember eactly what it is though, I posted about it before but Tom didn't know

Has anyone checked to see if this pops up in the Windows Event Viewer under 'Application'? Perhaps the actual error is in there still so Tom could see what it's actually doing. I'm at work now, but I'll see if I can find it this evening.

I haven't tried that but its a good idea. I'll try it next time to see what it says.

These events stay in the system until you manually clear them out (as I recall). So, if you have experienced an error like this, you should be able to see what it says without waiting for another instance.

If I had to advise, I'd say make sure you delete all the things in the GameEx folder that end in .exe (except Joy2Key and what you have added after install) and reinstall GameEx. Could be an old exe that's been around since before Framework 2.0 was solely incorperated into GameEx. I think that was around February of this year. If your install is older than that this may be your problem too.

In my case, the update was from 8.20 to 8.23. I'm pretty sure nothing major has changed with GameEx between there, so I think it's an Auto Updater error <_<

Oh, and I checked the Windows Event Viewer and nothing is in there about a GameEx failure unfortunately.

this is the error I get everytime I auto update

.NET-BroadcastEventWindow.2.0.0.0.378734a.0:GameEx.exe - A...

The exception unknown software exception (0xc0020001) occurred in the application at location 0x7x812a7b.

Click on OK to terminate the program

Like I said before though I just click ok and it carries on as normal

So then there are at least 2 different kinds of errors then. The one I had was a Windows error dialog, not a .net error and it indicated I/O in the line. I haven't experienced it since, but then I haven't updated since either. We'll see how it goes when I update next time (possibly tonight).

I took a screenshot of my error tonight and also copied the text from the error and included my log file for Tom to take a look at if he gets a chance. Maybe he can make some sense of it. The error was from tonight (12th), updating to 8.34 from 8.17. Like I said before though, my system (cab) has only 256 megs of ram in it. I'm guessing thats part of my problem.

Yep I've had that problem many times before myself, and I can tell you it will not be an easy bug for Tom to track down.

Yeah, don't look too easy to fix. No worries though, I just use the auto update to let me know there is an update.

Actually I may be wrong there. It does at least give an error message as to what is going wrong. From memory I got a .NET error that didn't say anything about the problem causing it.

When the error came up I opened the details button as seen in the picture. Thats where I copied the error text from. I'm no programmer so I can't make heads or tails of it. I thought you or Tom might be able to deciper it.

That looks like the same error I had based on the error text. So this is something that's been a problem for a while? If so, I won't worry about being the only one. Sorry for bringing up an old error. I didn't realize it had already been covered.

One question related to the Auto Updater: I have GameEx setup to load in fullscreen, but if I switch to windowed and update GameEx, it doesn't seem possible to window the Auto Updater. I have not tried changing the setting to startup windowed, so perhaps that would change the results.

So, the question is if it is possible to change the AU application to use the same mode as GameEx or at least make it windowable? It's not very friendly when doing other things with the computer and it takes over. Thanks!

Updater update. I used the auto update from 8.48 to 8.49 with no error! Yay it works! Thanks Tom.
