I think one of the recent updates wiped out my "by category", "by manufacturer", and "by year" categories. Has this happened to anyone else?

Can someone tell my how to fix it or where to download the appropriate file and the correct directory to put it?

Thank you.

you might want to grab the history.dat aswell

depending on your mame version mamestory.dat and command.dat are also great.

Thanks - where do they go? A gameex directory or a mame directory?

They can go whereever, but I keep them in my MAME directory. Use the advanced configuration wizard to determine where it should go or to change where you want it. I think it's in basic MAME settings.

I keep that stuff in the Mame directory. I always know where it is, and it automatically is read.

Mamestory.dat? Never heard of it.

Categories: I'm actually kind of surprised these are here. I don't use 'em in Mame32. However, this gives me pause for thought on how to mod them. Hmm.....

On MamePlus!: yeah, some of those things are neat. I've messed around a little with it, but I'm not sure many of the features I'd use. Some of them I don't even know what they do. When using something like GameEx, all the GUI stuff is irrelevant. On inclusions of some Advancemame features: the most interesting difference to me between this an any other regular Mame (and I think all other variants of Mame follow this trend) is how Advancemame handles native resolutions differently. It also has some more features in that vein.

well it also let you select command.dat for config menu (TAB) as well as hide/show game bezels

I don't know what command.dat is for. And on bezels, I have 'use bezel' selected in GE and it's not showing, even with .23

when you play 1941 for example it is a vertical game (does it strectch full screen? or do you have a black boarder on either side? or does it have mame/gameex logos on each side?

Borders. (I stretch games, but the most I go is 8/7, which still has borders.) No logo. GE config is set for 'use bezel'. Bezel is in the media (or some such) folder. It should show, yes?

I think you need to use the enforce apsect ratio option (in MAME). Maybe its stretching it too much for them to show propery?

maybe...

-[no]ka, -[no]keepaspect

Try / don't try to keep the aspect ratio of a game when selecting the best videomode.

Posted

Mmm, I hadn't thought of that. 'enforce aspect ratio' is default in Mame, and I keep it. (Some people like to fill a horizontal screen with vertical games - for example, ms pac - but I think it looks ghastly.) But I set the aspect back to the default 4/3 and still no bezel. I dunno.

Bummer..

What ver MAME are you using?

It doesn't matter what version I use, between mame32 .104 or .116 or mame .114. It's not a big deal. I just thought it might be neat.

I was refering to unofficial builds. And I actually believe it might due to the fact mame recently reworte the way MAME handles LAY files.

Anyways. In the advance settings of gameex under MAME options these are the switches I use.

-video d3d -joy -cheat -mt

It works fine for me.

BTW I would recommend downloading a MAME EXTRAS torrent they have all the correct snaps/overlays/cpanels and all the fun stuff.

I just dont understand why you are having such a hard time. Im not trying to be insulting :)

Maybe your files are no good.

Posted

Yeah, I beleive it was around version 0.109 that the overlays changed format. If you want to have them in a newer version of MAME, you will unfortunately have to get new ones I think. They aren't that big, so I just grabbed new ones and didn't worry about it.

Brian: dude, be firm. I won't wilt. I don't know why I'm having a hard time with some of these things, either. On your mentioned settings, I tend to stay away from that stuff. That's what we pay people like Tom for - in this case, if we've registered - to have it set up. I'm not having any trouble with snaps or overlays (and I shouldn't, cos these are Mame things....if they work in Mame, GameEx - or any fe - shouldn't interfere, and hasn't in my experience), but the bezel that comes stock with GE isn't showing, and I don't know how that would be a Mame issue. Dunno. Oh, also, half the time I'm using native resolutions, which uses ddraw.

bk: yeah, there are all kinds of new stuff for the recent versions of Mame. Except for the new DK, which is neat color-wise but I'm not hot on audio-wise (it's been redone and integrated into the core), I'm happy sticking with .104.

Enoch- can you try a fresh gameex install on a diffrent pc along with a fresh mame (you know with an unchanged config file)and see if it works?

Maybe somewere along the way in the various tweaking something happend.

I tend to think of Toms front end as a menu that lets me manage all the emus I have and I'am resposnsible for its configuration.

Tom does put alot of thought in his implementation of variuos configurations.

For example some of the MAME command line options are rompath/snaplocation etc and in toms fe the config looks at what you have filled in the configuration and automaticly builds and runs the approprate command line.

As with daphne Tom understands what daphne needs to be run via command line. The executable, the rom to run along with it,The framefile for that roms location.

Usually you run it like Daphne.exe lair -framefile c:\framefiles\dragonlair.txt. Tom breaks it down to parts and exen gives example configurations of it configuration.

Again its our responsiblity to fill these paths correctly.

Not all emulators follow a standard to conform too (Hence the reason why most of the configuration is up to the end user) It is unrealistic to think that any one person or many for that matter can can just do a scan or your files and say oh this is what you have and this is your emu so Im just going to use these settings.

Any program that does that will only upset other cause you lose the abilty to customize to configuration. Generally if you can run it via command line you wont have any problem getting it to run in gameex. Even some that dont run via command line some wonderfull and helpful peeps create wrappers and AHK scripts for everyone to use.

Thats not what I paid Tom for and he owes me nothing.

I really hope you get your problems sorted out. Let me know how the fresh config works out :)

Owe? I think nobody owes anybody anything, regardless of circumstance...but that's not a topic for this forum. I just meant that there are people who engineer things and I'm not one of 'em. On that second part, we already talked about that. On the bezel part, I'm not saying it's a GE error; particularly in light of the troubleshooting I did do, I can't see how it's a Mame issue, especially as it's not a Mame file. Doesn't matter. I went an tried what you said (with 8.27) on my 'work' computer. I can't even get the Mame list to show games. No idea. It would go without saying that VP doesn't work, either. Ah well.

Did you perform an update game list?(within gameex) And have your rompath setup correctly in the advanced config? Just asking.

Did you check you the daphne config video I put together? I really put it together for you and never recieved a comment on it. I do know you had some issues getting it setup.

If you would like I can put together a VP one as well. (It is tricky to get going I remember) :)

Iam sure all these issue can be ironed out.

You're very gracious, man. I thought you might've done that for that reason. I told ya not to worry, though. I'm waiting for Tom to arrange it so VP and Daphne will work from setting one path each. If he never does, I guess I'll be waiting forever. No worries.

Yeah, I updated the list three or four times. Nothing. Could be my computer, as recently I upgraded to XP Pro and it's been slow and weird ever since. It's strange, cos I have an old PIII that runs faster with Pro. Whatever, I'm going to wipe this one and re-install Home.

Well unfortunatly you might be waiting forever for that to happen as I cannot see how it would be possable.

pinball can have all the table in one dir and gameex uses rompath romfile so you donot need to create an entry for each of your games. I just made a guide---check it out

As far as daphne goes its a little work to set it up but once its done its done. Personaly I dont mind getting my hands dirty and I have a feeling of accomplishment. Daphne doesnt have many games it supports so it isnt too much work.

But hey to each thier own

It's cute now and then, for a little while. I get real tired of it. I look at it like I look at my body. Exercise and certain diet (and the latter is different for different people) is like knowing how to plug components together and powering them up. I'm interested in bio-chemistry, but I'm not interested in HAVING to know it for my body to work.
