- GameEx 4.53

  • In order to stop common
support problems, and make the installation
smoother, GameEx will not install and prompt you
if either the .net framework or DirectX9 is not
    installed.
  • There is also no longer an
option to download and install the .net framework
in the install, as this would not work on some
systems. Also DirectX is not downloadable from the
install, as this required a reboot.
  • This ensures basic
requirements are met for GameEx solving a few
support requests. It will also allow a Wizard to
be run from the install at a later date, as I can
be certain the framework is installed.
  • The install also has an
option to setup GameEx in 'lite' mode just for
games usage. These should hopefully make some
    users happy.
  • Language support has also
been improved. Languages are now stored in the
config folder, and are global across all themes
and independent unlike before. The current
language can also be set from the configuration
application. This should make it a lot easier for
updating the language files while extending to any
theme, and I hope to see some updates and new ones
    soon :)
  • There is a new theme 'GameEx
Animated' which animates the background slightly
by stretching. The default theme also animates. It
is extremely subtle much like MCE. If you want to
do this in your own themes, set anibak=true in
your theme.ini file. I'd  like feedback on
    this.
  • The default loading screen
has been replaced with something a bit more cool.
  • There a new setting under
Display, to have GameEx not switch resolution, and
run full screen at the current windows/desktop
    resolution.

Love the background animation and new loading screen.

The internal web browser seems very mixed up though. I went to News, mameWorld News, and picked [More ...] under Techno Mario. Page comes up and looks nice.

Then hit Backspace to go back. It gets really freaked out, it seems to have an identity crisis over which page to display (the News page flickers, but the MameWorld page re-appears ontop of it) and I'm pretty much stuck. Have to close down the program with alt-f4 to do anything.

Are you just using the keyboard? Do you have directinput turned on?

Does this happen every time?

Do I need to uninstall my version of GameEx before installing this new version? Looking forward to checking out the "lite" feature as I will probably only use this for my cab. Thanks so much for your hard work!

Do I have to uninstall my version of GameEX first, before installing the new version? I am looking forward to the "lite" GameEX as I will use it in my Cab. Does the "lite" version remove the jukebox capabilities or just the DVD, Photo and Movies options? I really like having the jukebox play while GameEX is running. Keep up the great work!

p.s. I thought I posted something similar to this a short while ago, but I can't find it. I apologize for the potential double posting...

You don't need to uninstall it, but if you have a long time install with the original MCE style theme ("Default - Default") picking Lite changes the config ini to use the Default - GameEx - Animated theme, which drastically changes the way things look. If you leave the full install it will retain your theme setting. I have yet to see any problems when upgrading from one version to the next.

Unsurprisingly, I did not notice even the slightest speed difference between the lite and full versions, but maybe people running on more RAM limited machines might see a difference.

I actually figured out how to disable the multimedia functions last night, so I probably will keep the full version in case I ever want those features. I am not concerned with speed, but wanted a little cleaner look since I almost exlusively use this for gaming. Thanks for your help.

Ok, it seems your all getting the wrong idea about the lite version. Its actually lite 'settings' rather than lite 'version'. I did not spend ages coding a special version, and I dont plan too.

It just disables all settings not relating to games, and changes the theme to a more 'game' related one.

When I say disables and changes that does not mean remove or set in stone. You can turn them on and change again from the configuration application.

Its all about perception and showing the full power and flexiblity of the product, as well as taking out some of the decision work for people who arnt too savvy with their PC's, or dont understand how software works.

Like how you can get rid of the XP style look in Windows and make it look like 2000. Most people dont know or do this. Its not a different version just turns off some stuff. e.g some people look at my PC screen and dont think Im running XP.
