Love the new Folders feature of GameEx, but I wasn't crazy about how they were displayed. So I went and made some one-dimentional folders, meaning all games are in the root folder so GameEx displays the folder name as the list name. (ie 'Quiz Games.ini' is displayed in GameEx as 'Quiz Games' and so forth.

Make a folder somewhere for these, open up the Configuration Wizard, and set a path to the extracted zip under Basic MAME Settings. Finally, you need to update your MAME game list. Then... Viola! You have some new folders. Included in the zip are:

  • Casino Games
  • Fighters
  • Platformers
  • Sports
  • Shooters
  • Racing Games
  • Casino Games
  • Maze & Puzzle Games

There's 16 folders all together, including a MAWS Top 100 MAME Games folder and a MAWS Hall of Fame folder. If things go down where I have the ability to do so, I will then make some more MAME 'M' logos for the individual folders to suppliment the existing set... I think that would make GameEx really pop, don't you? :D

All the games are current for MAME 0.111 and should work just fine. If you think I missed a game, let me know.

Enjoy!

.: EDIT :. I made some icons for these folders. They won't show up in GameEx (yet?) but I thought if on the chance that changes I'd show you what I meant by folder icons. :)

I also have a matching MAME icon set (same font and outline)... Just in case. :)

Mhh I must be stupid or something but I just don't see how to set those.

When I go the the configuration utility, under basic mame settings or even advanced options, I don't see any option to link to the directory with those ini files.

Could you maybe tell me what line to add in the config.ini file or where exactly put those category ini files ?

thanks a lot :)

Sure. No problem. :)

These folders are MAME favorites folders. You typically put them in a folder somewhere, then under START > GAMEEX > ADVANCED CONFIG select the BASIC MAME SETTINGS tab.

2 lines up from the bottom, there's a thing that reads:

Custom Lists Path:

Click BROWSE and point it to the folder you put the ini files in. For example, mine's in L:\mame\folders

And there ya have it. Update your game list and they should pop up under your MAME Categories screen in GameEx.

Thank you very much, I reinstalled gameex and now it is working, I have the option in the configuration :)

I do have another question :

Is it possible to have folders inside folders ?

I mean right now even if I put a sub category in a .ini file, gameex will display it in the root mame screen. Is it possible to write the .ini files in order to have sub folders inside the main folders ? for example inside your fighting games.ini I would love to have subfolders for capcom, snk, namco, etc ...

Thank you very much :)

No, it's not possible at this time. That's why I made these folders. :)

Hey Adultery,

How do you go about making the lists? I'd love to have a list for games more suitable for Kids but have no clue how to do it.

It's super easy. There's a layout that's pretty uniform.

Create a new TXT file & open it. The folder tree is like this:

[FOLDER_SETTINGS]
RootFolderIcon = cust1.ico
SubFolderIcon = cust2.ico

[ROOT_FOLDER]
topgunnr
gforce2
regulus
rockclim
mp_bio

I use MAME32 to browse for the games I want to add to my list and write down it's file name. For example:

I look for Gauntlet 2 in the MAME32 browser window. It'll show me the name of the game, the set file name, parent/clone relationship, BIOS, times played, etc. I see that Gauntlet 2 is gaunt2.zip

I add the file under the [ROOT_FOLDER] without the .zip and bingo! :)

When I constructed my own folders for different thing like BIOS files and favorites and stuff, I would also add [sUB_FOLDER] data under the [ROOT_FOLDER]. However, GameEx doesn't make a tree like MAME32 does, so all my root folders appear on the top MAME level with the Mature, CPS, ZiNc, Model 2, etc. folders. That gets to be a little cluttered to be honest, so I just make one dimentional folders and opt not to use the [sUB_FOLDER] settings.

Anyways, save your .txt file as you would like it to appear on the GameEx list and add an .ini at the end to change the extension. (Platformers.ini or Pinball Games.ini) Be sure to say OK when Windows warns you about changing file extensions.

Other notes that just occured to me:

Although you have the custom icons there, GameEx can't display them so it doesn't matter what you use. I used cust1.ico and cust2.ico because they're in my icon set and will display in MAME32. However, if you don't specify these icons, GameEx can't seem to read the list. So you should just put them there anyways. ;)

Any other questions, feel free to ask. :)

Sure thing. :)

Here's the zip file containing the full set of logos and the custom lists I created. Extraxt the icons to your

GameEx/Themes/xx-theme you're using-xx/Media/Logos folder. You can extract the folder lists where ever's good for you - just remember to point GameEx at 'em.

Update the MAME game list and away you go!

Enjoy everyone! ;)
