Hi, I'm pretty much a MAME/GameEx newb, and I had a question about MAME versions.

I SORTA get that mame dat files contain all the information about the Rom sets for whatever version of MAME you are running (I don't quite get how you validate your roms, or get updates, or new dats, or whatever.) I know GameEx uses the dat file to update the MAME list (for specifically what I'm not sure.)

So I downloaded a new Romset (v.111u5) and I looked into the dat file in GameEx (C:\Games\Emulators\GameEx\DATA\mameinfo.dat), and it says "# MAMEINFO.DAT v0.108 Last Update: 22nd August 2006" at the top. Do I need to get a new DAT file? I downloaded one named "MAME SuperSet v0.111", but I'm not sure if I just overwrite the GameEx one and update the "Advanced MAME Settings", or if I'm even SUPPOSSED to be doing that.

I did do several searches and got a lot of info on DATs and MAME and CLRMamePro, but I haven't yet assimilated it well enough to understand precisely what I'm to be doing when I update ROM sets, etc.

Any tips or help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Matthew

im really a bigger noob than you. but when i first started using gameex i found out that not all roms work with the newer mame builds.

so get your games running with the mame you are using first.

then i noticed that alot of imperfect and bearly working games + neo geo games wasnt showing up in gameex. what i did then was to

just adjust the filters in mame options to get those roms showing.

but im a big noob and didnt quite understand your question. so maby someone else with greater knowlage could answer this.

From what I loosely understand is that GameEx creates its own dat file based off the mame executable...so ideally if you have the matching mame version as your rom set...you should just tell GameEx to update the game list...and it'll do the rest.

Ahh ok...I THINK I did that, but I'll give it a try again. I was just surprised to see a reference to 1.08 when I had downloaded 1.11. I just wanted to make sure I hadn't done anything wrong.

Well I'm no expert dispite what it says under my avitar. :)

If any thing go hunting for one of the newer games added to mame and see if its present.

I don't think there was a lot of games added between 08 and 11...and those that where...I'm not sure if they where listed as working...or just added to the pile. ;)
