Attract Mode Issues

I posted about this before, but I'm still having problems in attract mode. After a few games, I get a .NET framework error, all my desktop icons disappear (along with half of my start menu) and the only way I can successfully shut down is through the task manager.

Any ideas as to what causes this?

Simple as it sounds, I would reinstall the .NET if it happens all the time. How much investigating have you done with the issue? Does it do it like every 5 games, or every 5 minutes? Or does it appear random? Does it happen when you're inside GameEx, playing a game, or only during the Attract Mode? It might be something simple like a newly installed emulator that's flaky and whenever GameEx tries to access it, everything crashes. Try and narrow it down before just reinstalling .NET.

Well, the issue is that I'm not running attract mode unless I'm away. I just found it hard to swallow that out of all the things I use that rely on .NET framework that GameEx's attract mode is the only thing that causes this problem. I have reinstalled framework (of course I did this before I posted the first time) and I have not made a single change in GameEx to cause this to happen. All I know is when I leave for work or hit the sack, everything's peachy. It seems to be a totally random thing.

I will re-install the .NET framework again, but I'm confident that this will not resolve the issue. Any other suggestions?

It sounds to me like your running out of memory or something. Try downloading Process Explorer and monitor the GameEx process (you can watch memory and CPU useage).

Also your log, so we can see if its a particular emulator. When I said exactly I was referring to that not .net framework install, but that its probably an emulator messing up and needing a lot more details.

As for the black screen is this hideos.exe perhaps? Have you tried ALT-F4 on it_

Is GameEx.exe still running? What is the .net error?

Really need much more info.

Another question is do you have Attract mode running purely with Mame games or are you running other emu's as well? If it's the latter try switching to Mame only and see if it crashes again.

OK. Here goes nothing.

Originally, I had a command line argument in MAME to run two screens: -numscreens 2 ; that was working OK up until a week or so ago. I took the command-line argument out hoping that would fix the problem. Now, instead of getting a framework error like I was before, the game will boot up and load, then after about 30 seconds GameEx detects a phantom key press and exits back to the menu. This is happening before I was getting the .NET framework error because usually the error comes after a few minutes of Attract Mode running. That means I might have a whole new problem and once it is solved the .NET error might still be lurking.

I was running pSX, ZSNES and NEStopia in the screensaver, but I took these out when I had originally started having the .NET error. I am using vanilla MAME version 0.111 with updated and verified ROM sets.

My log will show several instances of GameEx detecting a keypress, so I'll post it here.

I also watched my Memory widget (as per Kaze's suggestion) and my RAM is only running at about 50%. I'm nowhere near full capacity so that eliminates that problem.

The only emulator that has been changed / added since I started having the .NET issues was MUGEN, and I just added that yesterday (a week and a half after the problem started happening).

Ive actually had this same problem. It seems random. Only has happened a couple of times. Hasn't been that big of an issue. I do notice when starting Killer Instict and going straight into the input test menu. Player 2 Roundhouse kick is pressed several times in a row. Only for a few seconds. I doubt it has any relation but very weird. Ive even unpluged the switch on my cabinet cause I thought it was faulty.

Yeah occationally GameEx jumps out of Attract mode for me too. It's quite rare, but if I'm just leaving it running in Attract mode I can often walk past my cab and it's back on the menu.

This "keypress detected" error is driving me bananas! What the heck button is being pressed? I tried everything - even disabled my keyboard. I don't know what else to try.

Download my KeyCodes util and run it in the background. Then at least you can find out what the last key pressed is. Is this key mapped to your IPAC?

Perhaps then you can unplug your keyboard to see if it's registering the key from that, then try unplugging your IPAC and see if you get the same thing. Problem solving is a matter of elimination.

Finally if you have a wireless keyboard I would be highly suspicious of interference. I have a wireless mouse and when I am copying data over my 802.11g wireless network the mouse is unusable!

I do have a wireless keyboard actually. It was easier to mount in the cab that way. Never would have even thought of that! Went to a wired one... problem solved! Crazy!!

Yeah, wireless kb's are nice but they always seem to cause more problems than they're worth. I've got a wireless kb/mouse combo that I use for my Media Center. When I first started setting up GameEx I was having a problem with it. It would be detecting keypresses when I wasn't even using it. Interesting thing for me, was that the keypress was the DOWN arrow key! I couldn't use the menu system of GameEx because it wouldn't stop moving before I could select the game. Hehe. I took the kb back because it was cheap $20 generic "wannabe". I ended up buying a super expensive $120 set and haven't had a problem since. So it all kinda depends on the quality of the device I guess. The 1st one I bought was a line of sight infrared that only worked when you had the thing pointing right at the receiver. What sucked about it was if you had a key pressed then moved the kb out of linesight, the receiver never gets the "release" command from the kb and assumes it's "still on". This new one I've had since is RF (radio frequency) and works great. If you decide to go back to wireless, for whatever reason, be a little investigative on the functionality and receiver end. RF is way better than infrared in this case. Remote controls are probably the same (better in rf than ir).

I am having a similiar issue here with the attract mode. Basically it will load be on the screen for 1-2 minutes and exit back to the original menu that it was on before going to attract. I have the Microsoft Sam voice on and he comes on saying "welcome back.." as if I have chosen to come back to the menu. In trying to deduce this I have tried all the methods mentioned above plus the following:

-Unplugged both I-pacs and ran screen saver

-Replaced wireless keyboard with wired

-Ran Key tracer from above

-Checked all wored leads from Ipcas

Not to draw conjecture but it seems with the last release there are allot of issues with this, games exiting, and "key mashing" lock ups..I wonder if there is any link between these or they are all independent. I have attachyed my log any help would be appreciated as I leave my cab up 24X7 and this is my screen saver .

Can you try turning off my Exit GameEx plugin and see if the same problem occurs.

Actually it was happening before I turned it on. Turned your gamex exit on and it still happened I think the two are independent at least from what I can see at this point.

I'm sure you read my thread through before posting, but for me it was some sort of interferance (sp?) between my wireless keyboard. Are you using anything wireless? ie network card?

I have a wireless bridge that talks to the rest of my netowrk. Why would this go haywire with this release only? It seems that something changed that started to cause these issues.

I have looked at this and cant see anything. This issue has come up in the post prior to this version, and GameEx does nothing like create wireless signals or anything crazy like that. If you search the forum yourll see its not a new issue. I am sorry I cant help more, but I can tell you these kind of issues are a lot less prevelant than they were. Basically Windows (not GameEx) thinks theres a key pressed. Im not sure what virtual key code 4 is, it may be something weird like F-Lock, I dont know. Maybe MAME is turning on LEDs or something similar perhaps?

The issue is that wireless traffic interferes with wireless mouse and keyboards. I've seen it happen with my mouse during copying, basically it becomes unusable. So it's not really a GameEx issue at all, it's the fact that wireless devices are effected by 802.11x traffic and then GameEx is told there is a keypress or mouse movement.

Any way to set up GameEx so a specific key has to be pressed to exit attract mode? Not sure if it's even doable per se... Just thought it was a good idea for those of us who can't afford the Bluetooth technology. *shrugs*

I am OK with another wire in the cab, just was curious.
