I have Gameex and all my ROMS stored on an external hard drive, so the drive letter changes when I hook it up to a different computer. Is there a way to set the rom paths to be relative to the folder Gameex is in?

Otherwise, does anyone have any suggestions on how I could configure Gameex to run like this on different computers without having to re-configure the pathnames every time I switch computers?

Yes - I am assuming you are using XP

Take 1 machine - call it the primary machine

Connect up harddrive

Click on START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - ADMISTRATIVE TOOLS - COMPUTER MANAGEMENT

Click on DISK MANAGEMENT

Locate your external hard drive and right click

Click on CHANGE DRIVE LETTER

Set it for some letter that is available to all machines - like Z:

Now bring up Windows Explorer and go into drive Z: and reset all your emulators settings to look for roms, snaps, save staes, whatever on drive Z:

Now on the primary machine - reconfigure GAMEEX to use drive Z: in all the paths and what-not

Copy c:\program files\gameex to your external drive

Also get the GAMEEX SETUP.EXE file and save to hexternal harddrive too - speed up installation on the other computers

Now bring external hard drive to a new machine and connect up the hard drive

Click on START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - ADMISTRATIVE TOOLS - COMPUTER MANAGEMENT

Click on DISK MANAGEMENT

Locate your external hard drive and right click

Click on CHANGE DRIVE LETTER

Set it for Z:

Run GAMEEX SETUP.EXE from the external harddrive and let it install the needed files and whatever it does in the registry

Once setup - copy the Z:\program files\gameex to c:\program files\gameex

All things considered - you should be running like you were on the primary machine

If you update MAME and add ROMS, or add videos or a new emulator - do it on the primary with the external drive setup. Then copy c:\program files\gameex to the external harddrive...bring that drive to teh other computer(s) and copy z:\program files\gameex to c:\program files\gameex

*This way you dont need to rescan each time

Hope this helps

Oh, I didn't realize Gameex wrote so much to the registry. I was hoping to just run the GameEx executable of the external harddrive without having run the setup, but apparently that doesn't work.

But thanks for the advice. It does get me a lot closer to how I want it to work!
