Q: How do I set what buttons does what in GameEx?

A: In your GameEx\CONFIG folder, edit the file "custominput.ini". Look in "scancodes.txt" to see which code matches which key. You must also enable the use of custom input in GameEx Configuration -> Input -> Enable custom keyboard controls.

Q: Where do I configure my controls for MAME games in GameEx?

A: You don't. MAME has it's own configuration for buttons. In MAME, press the 'TAB' key on your keyboard to bring up the configuration screen. If you have MAME's default settings on, you use the 'arrow' keys to move around and 'enter' to make a selection. If you should press the wrong key, use 'escape' to nullify it.

Example: You want to set the keys for coin and for exiting MAME:

Press 'tab' then go to->

[input general] ->

[user Interface] ->

"UI Cancel" -> Set this to the button you will use to escape from MAME back to GameEx

When this is set, press it once more to go back to ->

[input general]->

[other controls]

set "Coin 1" -> the button you input credits with.

Q:How do I go through the gamelist alphabetically fast and easy?

A: There's a really nifty feature called "Alpha paging". To use it, first make sure that you have your shift button mapped, then go to GameEx Configuration app->Input and enable alpha paging.

Return to GameEx and position yourself in the game list, press and hold your shift button and turn your joystick right to skip from A->B->C->D->Etc. Hold shift and turn your stick downwards to skip a page.

Q: I want to upgrade GameEx, but I don't want to loose my settings, how do I do that?

A: Just go ahead and install the new version, your settings will stay.

Q:In MAME32, I see 2000+ more games than I do in GameEx, why don't they show up?

A: Open up GameEx Configuration app and go to Advanced MAME settings->Page 2:

Here you can change the filters that GameEx uses to import games.

Only working games

Allow imperfect games

etc.

Change to your liking, then open GameEx and update your game list again.

Q: Can I use multiple configurations to launch GameEx only for Games or only for Karaoke and so on?

A: Yes, GameEx has command line support, so you can create shortcuts that launches GameEx with different settings, like with the screen rotated for a vertical monitor, just for HTPC use, etc.

Example:

Make a copy of your gameex.ini and rename it to allfeatures.ini or something. Then turn off all your settings in your

original .ini to create a light version.

Create a shortcut for your full configuration GameEx with this commandline: gameex.exe config="c:\program

files\gameex\config\allfeatures.ini"

Q: I have a really stupid question, if I post it here, will I be flamed?

A: The users in this forum is very nice and easy going. No question is considered studid, however, please keep requests for roms and other copyrighted material off the forum. And if you're having a tough time setting up GameEx and getting it working the way you want, keep your cool and you shall recieve the help you need. And fast.

Q: How do I set up the [enter emu name of your choice here] to work in GameEx?

A: The users here upload their configs (.ini-files) to this thread:

http://www.gameex.info/forums/index.php?showtopic=3 where you can download them and import them in GameEx. To import an emulator, go to page 2 of GameEx Configuration app and click on an empty emulator button/one that you don't use yet. You'll know now what to do next.

Q: I have donated money to Tom Speirs to recieve a GameEx registration. It's been hours! When do I get it?

A: Tom does have a life outside of GameEx and also a job. You will recieve it to the e-mail account that you have registered with Pay-Pal. Sometimes minutes later, sometimes you'll just have to wait 48 hrs.

Q: I'm a registered user now, and when I play vertical MAME games on my horizontal screen, I get a GameEx logo and a MAME logo on each side. What is this and how do I remove it?

A: Open up GameEx Configuration app -> Basic MAME settings -> Disable 'Use bezel for vertical games'.

Thought I would help people out a bit. I suggest this gets pinned ASAP. ;)

Hi Emph,

I'd really prefer to keep it here: http://tomspeirs.com/gameEx/docs.htm

I think most people skip the homepage and go straight to the forum. Ive yet to click on the docs link. The only time I visit the homepage is to dl the update. I think once headkaze gets the help website fully established. That will be the place to direct people. Just my 2 cents. ^_^

My point exactly. Tom, how abot you put a sticky topic here called FAQ that points to your doc page? Every new software that I start using have either a FAQ directly on their main page, or a forum. A forum is more of a standard these days though, as people enjoy the interactivity, that's why most people come here asking the same questions over and over instead of reading your docs page. Hey, I'm just trying to help! :)

Yeah I tend to agree (and looks like Tom's pinned the FAQ), but also too many pinned topics looks ugly.

Tom: Perhaps you could move the "If GameEx is sluggish or slow read this" topic into the FAQ as a question "How can I improve the performance of GameEx".
