Its been noted in an earlier config posting that you can't get rid of the menu bar at the top of MESS by using the Sendkeys.

The problem can be resolved by going into the Default System Options and then clicking the Miscellaneous tab. Uncheck the box marked "Use New UI". This will cause MESS to act more like MAME. You will get full screen emulation without the menu bar and for everybody who has a slikstik, the exit shortcut for MAME will now work the same for MESS. There might be a switch you can add to the mess.exe but I am unaware of it. This is why my config uses messgui.exe instead.
