Hiya,

I've got my HTPC up and running pretty good now, and have loaded MAME32, with a view to installing Gamex once I get everything sorted. However, I'm having difficulty getting my MCE Keyboard and Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2 recognised in MAME32.

When I load up Pitfall 2, I'm supposed to either type "OK" on the keyboard, or activate "Left" then "Right" on the controller, to get past an initial screen. However, neither method works for me. Anyone got a clue what I'm not doing right?

Also, has anyone had any luck with Gamex? I'm using a regular TV (connected via S-video), and I hear AdvanceMAME might be better than MAME32 for configuring various TV settings. Some tips and advice would be much appreciated, as I've found the FAQs on the internet to be not much chop...

Regards,

Boz.

are you using the -joy switch in the mame command line options?

This sounds like an easy fix. First of all, make sure your controller is recognized by the computer. This is the easiest fix, and most often over looked. Just because your controller looks like it's working doesn't mean it really IS working (LED's just mean it has power, but no drivers means no worky worky). Go into your Control Panel and Joysticks and run through it's properties, checking the axis' and buttons. If everything is okie dokie, then open up MAME32. There is a system wide setting that enabled certain devices to be used. Make sure your SPECIFIC controller is listed. If you have something generic or nothing at all, then MAME isn't recognizing it, and it probably won't work. If your specific controller is recognized, make sure it's enabled and set to ID1 (for Player 1). If thats ok, then run your rom. Hit the [TAB] key to bring up the configure window. In here, make sure your options and controller mappings are set correctly. You may have to remap your LEFT and RIGHT keys from something like "LEFT" to "JOYPAD X1". That will let you use your controller. Lastly, if all else fails, go back to the system wide settings in MAME and change everything to KEYBOARD. Your keyboard should be working completely, as the keyboard is the basic and utmost default controller. If that doesn't work either, you're out of luck. It's either a driver problem, or bad hardware. Most issues can be solved by doing a little research, poking and prodding here and there, and even breaking things. If you screw something up, you can always reinstall it. I've broken MAME a lot of times trying to get the rendering right, etc.

Hope that helps, and remember to reply back if you still have problems. There may be something I overlooked.

Nope, not that I'm aware of - I'm not using the MAME command line, but MAME32 - with joystick settings enabled.

Mame32 still has the command line options, in fact it's the same as MAME but also with a built in GUI.

Oh OK. I got the gamepad working before I checked out the -joy command, but thanks anyway.

Hi Han,

Thanks for the detailed help - I'll update you on where I'm at...

I went through and checked all the gamepad stuff, and it is now working a treat!

Now all I have to do is get my MCE keyboard working...

Lastly, if all else fails, go back to the system wide settings in MAME and change everything to KEYBOARD. Your keyboard should be working completely, as the keyboard is the basic and utmost default controller.

With KEYBOARD set system-wide, both my PS/2 and my MCE Keyboard work fine within MAME32. However, when I launch a game, only the PS/2 keyboard works. Using the PS/2 keyboard, I can [TAB] in to configure the settings and assign keys via the PS/2 keyboard. But from within this configuration screen, none of the MCE keyboard strokes are detected.

Somehow I don't think I'm gonna make any progress trying to solve this from within a launched game environment ---> is there a MAME32 setting that I may have overlooked that might force the MCE keyboard to be recognised by the game.

Thanks again for your help.

Arghh!!!

My MCE Keyboard and/or wireless mouse enables me to launch a game from MAME32. Given my MCE Keyboard won't work inside a game, I've re-assigned game controls to my gamepad which works great.

However, when I'm finished playing, I can't quit the game as there doesn't seem to be a key I can assign to the gamepad to quit from within the game. The only way I know of to quit a game is the keyboard [ESCAPE] key, so I'm snookered because my MCE Keyboard doesn't work inside the game!

Anyone know how to quit a game without having to hit the keyboard [ESCAPE] key?

Cheers, Boz.

Anyone?

In the MAME config in the OTHER CONTROLS SECTION, Choose UI CANCEL and reassign the key to a joypad button. This will close mame via your button I recommend during the reassignment to press multiple keys at the same time that way you dont accidently colse your game in the middle of playing on accident.

Have fun
