First of all, I must say that I am in LOVE WITH GAMEEX!!! Tom, my word, this thing is INCREDIBLE!!!!! Thank you for all the hard work!!!

That said, unfortunately, I'm having a (very tiny) bit of trouble. I have JoyToKey set up so that when I hit a button on my joypad it fires off an "Alt-F4-Esc" catch-all command to bail from an emulator back to GameEx.

When using ZSNES, here's what happens:

Launch GameEx

Select a game in my Super Nintendo Games list

Enter ZSnes game

Hit the "Alt-F4-Esc" button on the joypad

Exits ZSnes, back into GameEx no problem

Select a new SNES game

Enter ZSnes game

Hit the "Alt-F4-Esc" button on the joypad

Exits ZSnes, but gives this time I get the log with, "20 Consecutive Exceptions Occured: Exiting"

Strangely, I had this problem with another emulator (FCEU, I believe) and I fixed it by simply setting the emulator (in its GUI) to open at 800x600 (my native resolution) instead of the 640x480 it was set with. I tried this with ZSnes (setting the res in the GUI) but, alas, no luck. I'll attach to this post my log and ini. Using the newest version of GameEx: 3.50.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide!

Yeah I made sure the name of the exe was case-sensitive in setting up my ini, no luck. :(

Try setting your button combo just to be escape (not alt-f4), and using the MAP Keys setting (on) for the emulator. That is the correct way to use joytokey.

I actually think that will likely solve your problems.

Let us know.

Thanks,

Tom.

Ohhh, thanks for the info! Can't wait to rush home and try it tonight (darn work, keeping me from playing with GameEx).

Thanks Tom! I'll post results ASAP.

Bummer... :( I switched it to do a simple Escape button-press (no alt-f4) and made sure the key mapping was set to true. Unfortunately, I'm still having the same problem.

I tried using snes9x, but got the same results: 20 consecutive errors message whenever I bail from the 2nd game.

Any thoughts? Thanks a ton for the help!

Can you post your log, and GameEx.ini.

AHAAA!!!! Figured it out!!

I started toggling through each of the resolution options in the emulator. Turns out, if I use a "Full" mode, I get the error. But, if I use a "Windowed" mode, everything is fine! Which is okay, since the 800x600 windowed mode fills the screen, and has no sign of a window. Phew!!!

Can you post your log, and GameEx.ini.

Attached for the first post, for reference, if you still need it.

This is an interesting problem, though. It seems that with some emulators, you cannot pick a resolution (e.g. Gens, A26), which means that if the screen resolution doesn't match GameEx, you get the crash after two consecutive exits from games of that emulator.

At least, that's what I think is happening...

It might be that's what happening in your case, but its certainly not happening to everyone from what I can tell.

Your log and GameEx.ini might shed some light. Also details on the software/os you are running and your hardware.

Thanks.

I have a WinXP box hooked up to my TV via S-Video. My graphics card is built in to the NVidia GeForce 4 MX Integrated GPU.

After a ton of tests, here's what I've come up with.

In order to successfully exit from an emulator twice in a row (and not receive a crash and log), the resolution I have GameEx set to MUST match the emulator settings. If I set GameEx to 640x480, then Gens works (native res is 640x480, and can't be changed). But, if I do this, then GameEx won't launch MAME (can it launch MAME if set to 640x480? It crashes when I try to launch a game when set that way).

So, I'm at a loss. If I set GameEx to 640x480 I lose MAME, but if I set it to 800x600 I lose emulators that can't scale to that resolution (Gens, Stella).

Attached to this post is my ini and log in a zip file (settings.zip).

Thanks so much for your help... I'm at a loss!

Hi, I have seen similar issues with DirectX GameEx. In fact initially it would not work if the resolution used was the same as Windows desktop. I had to write code to switch to another resolution first.

You can however make MAME run at any resolution you like. You can set this in gameex by changing the MAME options. Here is mine:

MameOptions=-resolution 960x540 -skip_disclaimer -skip_gameinfo -triplebuffer -nowindow -joy -matchrefresh -syncrefresh

Just add -resolution 640x480 to your MAME options in GameEx.

Thanks,

Tom

Right on! I'll give that a try. Since it seems like every emulator can run at 640x480, but many can't handle 800x600, I'll try standardizing all of them to 640x480 (and even my windows desktop) to the same resolution.

I will post results shortly! Thanks again Tom!

Doesn't work... :( If I set GameEx to 640x480, after I select a game it will not get as far as even launching MAME before it crashes... :(

Usually when you select a game, you get the white info pop-up at the bottom of the screen, but that doesn't come up. GameEx crashes the second I select a game when it's set to 640x480.

Attached in a zip file are my most recents ini and configs.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Try running GameEx at a different resolution to your desktop, or vice versa.

As I've said Ive seen this when GameEx is running at the same res as the desktop. Ive not seen it affect emulators though, although it may be because your outputting to TV that's causing that.

I take it also youve tried the latest drivers for your card/system?

You could also see if your Geforce drivers allow you to create another resolution.

Sigh.

Your response to the last thread I posted in was great, that was indeed the problem (no idea how I got ahold of MAME 0.65 in the first place, ha). So, here I am again; I now share the same problem as Nightlife.

After seeing the improvements made to MAME, I decided to check out AdvanceMAME. It is working wonderfully all the way up to quitting, where GameEx now gives me the 20 Consecutive Errors after a "Memory Could Not Be Written" or "Memory Could Not Be Read" dialog box.

I've tried resolutions of all kinds and combinations in all 3 domains (Desktop, GameEx and AdvanceMAME) with the same result. Video card is a GeForce2MX running Composite Out using the most recent drivers (I also updated GameEx to 4.04 today). I'm so close... : )

By the way, does anyone have any ideas on controlling Media Center with the gamepad as well? I suppose I could probably work it out with Joy2Key...

Thanks again to all,

Luke

Your barking up the wrong tree in regard to resolutions. The 20 consecutive exceptions is a generic thing GameEx does when it encounters issues of all kinds.

The latest version of the Windows Advance MAME works fine for me. Sorry no idea.

Have you tried older video drivers? I had all sorts of problems on my MCE box (not just with GameEx) with the newer 7 series NVidia drivers. Everything went back to being solid as a rock with 6703.

I am definitely not having these problems. I launch MAME and other emulators with all sorts of different resolutions without a hitch.
