[IGNORE] Anyone else getting "there are some data after the end of the payload data" with 7z?

So 7z has decided to stop working for some bonkers reason. Gives the error above. Anyone else having this problem. Was working fine before. Google search shows author giving the technical reasons behind this over time, but just bizarre how didn't have this problem before and now started happening!

Messes up any operations where there's some kind of 'wait for completion' because a 7z gui just sits there holding everything up.

In what context? In normal use in windows or with an app?

I do get that error with some files, yes but not on everything and when I do get the error it still tends to do the extraction.

OK - digging revealed it was always happening, but invisibly - another error highlighting this one. Into the heart of darkness....
