Normal font size is 'small' in vertical mode

When I run a theme in 1280x1024 with the normal font size, there seems to be a disproportionate difference between the resulting font size when in vertical mode as opposed to horizontal mode. Attached are two screen shots to illustrate.

Would it be possible to tweak something so that the font sizes approximately match in both modes?
