I was thinking about throwing together a website that hosts Config files for commonly used emulators, instructions on setting them up in GameEx and a list of commands for each F key once the EMU is running.

How willing would the community be to help with such a project? this might deter alot of the emulator setup questions we answer all the time (like using quotation marks, editing the Database, etc)

What do ya think?

Of course I'm gonna think this is a great idea :)

You have my full blessing, and if you want a free web account, ftp, and web space you've got it. Just drop me an email. However, I don't have enough time right now to contribute anything else other than this or answer any questions you may have.

Let me be the first to say 'Amen', yeeehah, and hooray!

I would love to see a site like this.

I have my own web space and all, just thought maybe you'd like to add a referrer to make it easier to find (like http:\\configs.gameex.com or what have you) and a link from your links page... Maybe a nice clean .gif of your logo for the front page or whatnot.

As far as contributions from the community go, I was looking more toward some of the regulars that regularly diagnose emulator problems. I'd much rather see you spending time on GameEx than something we can handle on our own. :)

I'll see if I can't get something up and going right now. If anyone has any config files for emulators that are less popular and wants to contribute to an emulator-specific FAQ (like Gens or ePSXe for example) let me know.

Thanks, sounds good.

Something I really would like done, but didn't feel it right to ask the community, is a well written guide based at real newbies on setting up MAME and a generic guide on setting up an emulator with perhaps just a few examples for the most common, ZSNES, Stella etc.

This is indeed a very good idea Adultery. Of course, anybody who actually spends a little bit of time reading the documents and probing the forum can figure it all out on their own. One suggestion for your site.. set it up according to System, then under each system list their emulators, and then under the emulator have the configs. That way it's easy to navigate. If I'm new and want to get an NES system up and running, I'm not going to be looking for any particular config right off the bat. Going from NES to JNES would be much easier in my opinion. Also, for each system you should have an email link or something so somebody can send you a new config. That would make the work a little less painful and strenuous for you. You could also have a little subsection for details on setting up / installing the emulators. Hell, if you hadn't thought of it, I'd probably make a site like that myself. Heh.

What you say is true, yes... but we live in a society where pretty pictures and simple explanations are easier for people to follow.

I intend to implement a by-system walkthrough for as many emulators as I can, and of course there will be a section of the page with a form to fill out and email so I can add new configs all the time.

The layout will be very user friendly and even the noobiest of noobs will be able to get GameEx up and running flawlessly in a matter of hours.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

.:EDIT:. The beast is already up and running (well, the index page is anyhow... And the layout is done. Also got the GameEx step by step started and added links to download each item - ie flyers, icons, snaps, cabinet art, etc. I'll work like hell to get it going at full rip just as soon as I can.

Anyone who wants to keep up on the progress can check it out here:

The GameEx ConfigHQ

Thanks again for a truly awesome front-end... And something to keep me busy. :)

I think it would be great. Of course I just went through the whole trying to figure it out today, and I admit that would have helped alot. Thankful I atleast have the forum to ask question for now:) Hopefully I'll get all the problems settled soon.

Looks good so far! If it really picks up and starts getting a lot of traffic, maybe you can consider setting up an MCE configuration page. :)

Heh, I suggest this only in joke because my MCE is totally f*d up right now. My computer's network stopped working. I thought it was drivers or something, but after a complete reinstall of TCP/IP, DNS, WINS, DHCP, nic drivers, etc, nothing worked. So like a dummy I formatted my system, just to find out it still didn't work after reinstalling Windows. I later discovered that a jumper had fallen off my MB that enabled the port (the way my case is designed, the MB hangs upside down). So now that it's fixed, I'm having one heck of a time trying to get MCE working again. I've spent like a week poking and prodding but can't get the stupid TV to work right. It keeps locking up and freezing, and stuttering, etc. When it decides it's ready to work, it'll work for an hour then stop again! ARRG! Once I get it fully back up and working, I'm gonna backup with Ghost so I never have to go through this again. Say, any ideas/suggestions for me from the forum visitors?

I just checked this out, looking very good, even already. Thanks a lot for this. Let me know if I can help at all.

Thanks. :)

The GameEx advanced configurations is the real labor muncher since your FE have so many options (not that that's a bad thing!) but after another 3 days or so I should have that completed. *knocks on wood*

I could use a couple things from the community, however...

If anyone has a nice set of console system pictures (that are the same size and preferably in .gif format although I can convert them myself), I would like to have them for the Emulator setup portion of the site. That would be extremely helpful.

I also intend to set up a forum specifically for config questions and posts. As soon as it's up I'll post a link and anyone who would like to contribute their .cfg files can do so.

Thanks everyone for your help! :)

.:EDIT:. The forum is now up and running. If anyone has .cfg files to donate, stop in and upload 'em to me. Thanks!:.

Hi Adultry, would you mind if we had a seperate forum here for the configs? Just would like to keep things centralised and easy for the user community. I am happy to create a new forum and make you a moderator. What do you think is that possible?

To be honest... I would rather it that way. I just put the forum up so I wouldn't be all in your way. :)

I don't really have time to maintain a forum, so if you'd be willing to do that, I'd be thankful. :)

Can we not have a new forum at all then, and you can just redirect folks here? It won't be in the way :)

Entirely up to you big guy. :)

As long as you don't mind the extra traffic and all... Like I said before - the less in your way I get the better. :)
