Which emulator should I use? Plain old Mame, Mame32, Advanced Mame? What are the advantages/disadvantages? Is any one in particular better than another? What do most people use? Which works best with GameEx?

Just removed your reference to ROMs

I would recommend Mame32FX because that's what I use, but Mame32 should be fine enough (and I think Mame32FX's last version will be 0.106 - since he's not building it anymore). I don't know much about Advance Mame.

Yeah I've been doing some looking around over at mameworld and it looks like MAME32 has its own front end in a way. How well does GameEx work with Mame32? Is there a bunch of hoops to jump through to get it to work?

I use MAME32 and it's an exact port (more or less) to Windows. Basically, MAME32 is just a front end to MAME. You use either and they both do the exact same things.

If you know how to use a command line pretty well, then use MAME. If you're more experienced with Windows, use MAME32 (the 32 on any program more or less means it's for windows.)

If you want to use other ports (like MAMEFX, MAMEPlus! etc) they basically just add functionality to MAME.

Example: MAMEplus! supports ROMs MAME doesn't, also adds functionality that originnal MAME authors nixed from the program - like the ability to skip the disclaimer.

MAME or MAME32 are nice programs, but if you wanna tweak things a bit you'd be good checking out a different port.

Hope that helps! :)
