Is there any way in GameEx of creating a seperate list of Games from different Emulators, so I can say put all my 'Out Run' versions together in one list. A sort of saved Search facility?

The favorites list should be able to accomplish what you describe here, but not a lot more. The catch is that there is only one global favorites list for all of GameEx. So let's say if you wanted one list containing all the Outrun games and another list containing all the Ridge Racer games, the global favorites list is not going to be able to accomplish that. One of the more popular feature requests in GameEx has been to allow for the creation of multiple favorites lists. Please feel free to re-up that request if you'd like to do so.

You could also probably achieve similar functionality using the Emulator Groups feature, but it would get complicated in a hurry since you'd need to do some heavy manipulation of ROM directories. You'd also likely chew through your available emulator slots and emulator groups pretty quickly.

I really need to make an exe that launches the emulator on a game by game basis and sits idle until the emulator closes so GameEx won't close after launching, which would make this possible without any complicated GameEx code base integration. Which shouldn't be terribly difficult, but I just never got around to... It would really be handy since this is an often requested feature that there's currenty no suitable workaround for.

Maybe now is the time, I have a few other things ahead of this in the cue though.

I would have to figure out a way to put together a gui that can build a map file from user's desired the game list (maybe even build a folder based on your selections) and a way for the user to find/select the database entry from the current GameEx db emulator integration. Maybe even generate an importable emulator config.

Any thoughts on this?

Not really any input other than i really think it would be one of the most valuable projects you have undertaken - up there with Xpadder Plugin and our phenomenal HiScore Manager (which granted most people are unaware of but trust me it is epic!). It really is one of the most requested features and if you could pull it off, it will blow shxx wide open on the custom faves front. Custom lists, custom menus, and favorites - get them 3 right and that's a free ticket to pwnage town! WOOWOO :P 2/3 so far....

If anyone can do it, you're the man for the job! :D

In some ways I think the functionality of an app like this would be very similar to Mame Emu Mapping Magician. Where it deviates, (and perhaps where it becomes significantly more tricky), is that this app would need to be able to create an all new game list to display in GameEx with mapping to multiple emulators, whereas Mame Emu Mapping Magician is able to leverage the standard Mame list. Maybe this could be accomplished using dedicated emulator slots for each individual list? I dunno, but I can certainly say that I'd be highly interested in something like this.

Finally I could create lists for the entire Mario series, Zelda series, Final Fantasy series, etc!

Edit:

Duuuude ... It would be super pimpin' if you could figure out how to force the app to use the Merge Sets feature so that all your favorites lists could live under a single emulator slot. So like you'd have an Emulator Slot called 'Favorites Lists' (or whatevs). Under that list (what would normally be your Game List) you'd see Super Mario Bros. Series, Legend of Zelda Series, etc. Then when you clicked on a series name you'd bring up the screen which linked to each individual game (what would normally be the game details screen - with multiple games selectable via the Merge Sets feature). It might get a little bit odd with the artwork and whatnot, but IMO it would be worth it to have multiple favorites lists while only sacrificing a single emulator slot.

So what I'm thinking is it generates a map file, and that map file points to an id number. When gameex passes the id, the game is launched by the exe.

Each one would be a seperate emu, bit I might pul it all together for several different emus by generating a group list in the gameex ini.

I think I can leverage the grouping issue with a custom db, but I'm sure things will progress quickly. :)

I'm probably also going to use a super high emu number so the user doesn't need to worry about the natural order of their current emus. I plan on adding emus in programatically for this as opposed to doing an import/export.

But I'm still in the wireframing stage, probably gonna be a while before I release anything. :)

If I'm not mistaken, HyperLaunch can do this with HyperSpin... not sure how it all works being that I haven't updated my HS setup in a few years... too much work :P Would be interesting to have GameEx be able to do this, and allow custom menus, and such for those custom game lists. All the Mega Man games in one spot with custom themes and such.... very nice. Maybe Evolution?

One thing that is semi what you need.

If you are using the databases for your emu (and if you are not - though to a lesser extent) when you select outrun it should list 'also on' and show all other systems with the game.

Perhaps there could be a way to use this functionality to generate a special list to retain the 'also on' as favourites?

I only mention databases as this will also work with differently named Roms and also match across different spelling and languages (or it should at least). Ie. Tempest SHOULD list tempest 2000 amongst its matches.
