I think it would be a kick to run the competition across multiple systems. I really like how how this competition kind of has almost a "scavenger hunt" sort of vibe insofar as it has you going to a bunch of different places to do different things (maybe that would make it more like geocaching ... I dunno ). Any hoo, I think the addition of multiple systems would really enhance the vibe of "round the world and back again".

OTOH it also increases the amount of planning and administration, so do with that what you will.

+1 - I was so feelin that kind of vibe too... I like the thought of a chaotic comp, people scrambling to get the most kills in the least amount of time, to get to level 3-3 the quickest, to get to £1.000,000 whilst eating an infested leg the quickest... /the random-ness could go on forever...

I'd prefer our summer comp to have challenges on multiple systems / consoles. It' s an ideal way to see how many are interested in playing hi-score games on other platforms than Mame.

If we generate enough interest it's our idea to maybe even start other platform hi-score competitions in our Arena forum. For example a NES comp, a Sega comp, an Atari comp etc. with possible its own Game of the Month competition or other console challenges. There should however be enough interest to play in comps like this. I'd be more than willing to mod something like this if there is enough interest. A multi console summer comp is ideal to give this a kind of test run.

Thank you for your ideas NP and Draco :)

Heh, you know what, everything Den says makes sense, and everything we discussed made sense, therefore, by pure logic, i will back my partner up on what he just said -100%. B)

Yeah man let's hear em! ;) Here's an obvious one but thought i'd put it out there - Sonic 1 Megadrive/Genesis Greenhill zones.

Yep, obvious but a top choice, Most of the non MAME competitions will stem from 8-Bit / 16-Bit games.

Example Speedrun's

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Sega Genesis/Megadrive)

Easy: Emerald Hill Zone Act 1 (Accessible to all)

Medium: Casino Night Act 1 (Accessible to some)

Hard: Metropolis Act 1 (Accessible to few)

With these sort of speedruns I think level select cheats should be allowed because not all people can reach the later levels.

Here's one that's completely mental (and thus I like it quite a bit ... ;))

Final Fantasy (NES)

Goal: Defeat Garland with a party consisting entirely of White Mages. Clarification in spoiler tag (which actually does contain a potential plot spoiler for this game in the event that you've never played it - what's wrong with you? :))

I'm referring only to the first Garland encounter here

Scoring: Scoring will be based on the highest percentage of remaining hit points across all party members

Another way to work it is that we could possibly tier for each console competition.

Examples:

Easy: Super Mario Bros. (NES) Level 1-1 speedrun

Medium: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Sega Genesis) Emerald Hill Zone Act 1 speedrun

Hard: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Sega Genesis) Metropolis Zone Act 1 speedrun

Very Hard: Super Mario Bros. (NES) Level 8-4 speedrun

I like the idea, but couldn't see it work - the reason being, that what one may find easy, the other may not. And vice~versa. This would rather hinder an effort to create Tiers would it not? :tea:

EDIT - i totally agree though, Dennis and I were discussing about keeping a couple of the hard ones back for a 'Grand Finale' type deal. If we could somehow rate the challenges, what do you guys think of that?

I think at the end of the day you should set the competition as you see fit, I'm pretty sure you can work something out. ;)
