How does GameEX know how to play media for instance.... I'll use a Sega Saturn game, say Alien Trilogy:

My archive name is "Alien Trilogy (U)" and the media file name is "Alien Trilogy (USA)" and yes my directories are correct for ISO's and media. Do my archives have to have the EXACT name? I do have "snap best match" I believe it is called enabled. Only Saturn and TG16 CD I have this problem, every other system is fine as far as I know.

It should indeed play if you have Snap Best Match enabled. Using your example try renaming the vid to match your rom/archive exactly. If it then plays you may have found a bug (you'd be the first to report this though). If it still doesn't play then i would guess you have a codec problem. Try installing the recommended Shark007's Codecs - it resolves these kind of issues 99% of the time :)

i have the same problems for i.e. atari 2600, if I use the GameEx database, I have to rename all videosnaps exactly to that name, otherwise they dont show up :( . If I dont use the GameEx Database they show up working with "snap best match" function. Its kinda weird  . My way to solve this, was to download the snapshot-PICTURES and then to rename all the videosnaps like them. pain in da ass if you ask me. I didnt find a better way and would be happy, to see another solution for this.

Very busy these days so I haven't had time to fire up the HTPC with work, school and now moving. Now, I have installed the codecs and that got some systems working - for whatever reason my Game Boy and Game Boy Color snaps needed them to work.

I have not tried renaming my files within my archives (.zip, 7z etc) yet however I don't get how mame works when they have files within a archive. I wish the snap best match, well was tied to archive name but hmm maybe I need to try a database as I don't use any.

This may well be your problem! I don't know whether you setup MAME in the integrated section within GameEx or not, you haven't provided the required info yet, but the bottom line is when it comes to MAME and getting the best out of it you should always take this route. Not only will it give you some nice extra options in regards to MAME, it will automatically use the right database which might be why your "Snap Best Match" is not working as it should. Try to setup MAME as mentioned (within the dedicated section, not as a normal emulator), filling in as many paths as you can then get back to us, posting your GameEx.ini and log.txt as mentioned earlier.

Thanks!

PS: If you have a legit MAME romset/files you don't need to do ANY renaming/extracting of the sort.

OK, using Alien Trilogy on the Sega Saturn as an example - I used it earlier as a random game. I renamed the archive name from Alien Trilogy (U).zip to Alien Trilogy (USA).zip and it worked media wise but I will try a database and report back.

Yeah, you shouldn't need to go to such measures. Sorry i forgot you were having problems with other systems. In Setup Wizard> Emulator Setup> Database, click the drop-down and choose "[Console] Sega Saturn", see if you get any change.
