Save/Load Game States from NES/SEGA/N64...

Hey guys,

This is my first post and first question (although I've been on the forums reading for a while), so please be patient :) thank you,

A little background info first I guess, I just finished building my NES PC about a month and a half ago and I attempted installing HyperSpin on it, very very frustrating. I then came across GameEx which was much more user friendly and exactly what I was looking for. Also the community and support is incredible and most issues that I've had I've been able to fix just by reading previous posts/threads. I also donated/paid the $20 or so for the registered version (worth every penny).

I have these emulators running on my gameEx setup:

-NES (Nestopia)

-SNES (zsnes)

-N64 (Project 64 2.0)

-Gameboy Advance (Visual Boy Advance)

-SEGA Master System (mekaw)

-Sega Genesis (Fusion)

-Playstation 1 (epsxe 1.90)

Now my issue is, I want to be able to save/load game states while playing a game on NES or SEGA etc. without having to use my keyboard. I want to be able to use my gamepad (Logitech F710 Gamepad).

Currently the SNES is the only one I've been able to do this on due to the hotkey that's built into zsnes. If you go into the zsnes emulator outside of GameEx "Config>Saves>State Shortcuts" you can make it one of your gamepad keys for saving and loading.

Is there any function on GameEx that allows you set this up with every emulator? I haven't been able to find this. Sorry if a tutorial or explanation does exsist somewhere, but I haven't found it.

Thanks so much guys and I really look forward to becoming a part of the GameEx community!!!

Hi DoCouto19 and welcome to the GameEx forums!

I am in agreement that the ability to use save states is one of the great features of the emulation hobby. As someone who doesn't have as much time for gaming as I used to, I don't have time to repeatedly try the same thing over and over again to grind through levels (I'm looking squarely at you BattleToads ) Thank you save states!

Being that I use an HTPC setup I also like to avoid keyboard interaction as much as possible. What I do is use Xpadder to map keyboard macros to controller button combinations (In my particular setup I generally map save state functionality to Start+Select).

Essentially this starts to get into some nuts and bolts discussion of Xpadder, you should be able to do the same thing with most controller mapping programs (Pinnacle Game Profiler, the Logitech Gaming Software, and even GameEx has built in controller mapping functionality). My recommendation would be to take a look at the various controller mapping utilities available, and decide which one is right for you. My opinion is that it's a critical piece in your toolbelt of emulation utilities. Bear in mind that there is an excellent Xpadder plugin for GameEx. We also have a few PGP stalwarts and folks using the built in GameEx functionality as well.

Once you decide what utility works for you we might be able to provide some further direction should you hit any snags. Good luck man!
