Is their any way of making a portable version of GameEX?

Right now I have all my software/roms/emulators on a usb3.0 1tb drive. I would like to be able to just grab the drive and microsoft wireless adapter and go anywhere. Maybe I'm coming to much from a Mac angle, where the majority of apps can do this, But it would be nice.

I do have to add though, as much as I LOVE GameEX and the work that Tom and everyone else has done, this is a nightmare application to install on a clean machine.

Two reasons:

1. The nag screen coming AND going. I understand the nag screen when I launch the software, but when I was trying to leave to have it also hold for 15 or so seconds. That's uncalled for. To not allow me to leave the app when I so chose is just not very sportsman like.

2. The auto opt-in toolbar for your web browser. I almost missed this, since when you update GameEX you don't see this, but when it's a fresh install You need to chose to opt-out of using a search toolbar to auto install.

Let me opt-in on my own, that's fine by me, but to install software for something that I did not download to have installed is terrible practice. download.com started do this "stuff" and I've(and many others) have never been back sense.

The default should be opt-out of installing a toolbar if you are going to have this at all. But I feel this is the same as installing malware on someones computer. I assume when I download an installer for GameEX (or any software) that I am download to install that specific piece of software and nothing less.

Charge a yearly subscription fee, I'm in, this software has more then been worth whatever I paid years ago to first get rid of that nag screen.

Sorry for the (off topic) rant, still love the work of GameEX just not all the practices surrounding it sometimes.

I realise its not ideal and thank you for the feedback but I feel its a good compromise (to ensure longevity) overall and I have worked hard making sure it is as good a compromise as possible. I worked hard on it and it was not just blindly done that way.

Cheers.

Tom.

90% of software comes this way. Folks ought to just slow down and read if they want to avoid toolbars. ;-)

Its only for the first install too, it's not like a lot of software out there where you have to look hard just to download the free version, and have to opt out of the extras each and every time you update.

That's why I have no problem paying for good software, which this very much is.

It was a late night, and a rant that kinda popped out of know-where, but after hassling doing a clean install of windows on a new SSD that was one of the bigger headaches that was thought to be easy, this just tipped me over the edge after seeing a software I love try to bite me on my nice new and clutter free system.

So I do apologize for taking my quandary out here.

So kinda over-shadowed my question, is their a way to make a portable version that wouldn't need to be installed on every system it sat on?

So: You might need to do a basic minimal install on the machine but GameEx and your related data will run fine from the USB. Obviously paths might need changing too.

So basically its not really easily doable right now.

That's what I figured, when I tried to run GameEX from the external drive on the clean windows, it gave me an error, but when I reinstalled and pointed to the external drive to install onto It ran and had the setting from the preinstall.
