Mame games - controls work from cmd launch but not from GameEx launch

As it says in the title. When launch from GE - even Tab doesn't work. However - when use cmd line from log.txt in cmd - games launch fine with keys working.

Checked - xpadder set to off in xpadder plugin for mame. (and not running in system tray)

Any ideas? I love the way you get things set up a while ago, and when you come back to them later - they're broken again. This hobby's gonna drive me to madness or killing flowers for kicks.
