Plex access

My wife wanted me to enable video viewing while she worked out on the recumbant bike. So I enabled Videos and told it the path to both movies and tv shows on my house server.

When I went into the video section, I noticed that Gameex also showed my the Plex server (which I use on the house server to access my movies from the bedroom using my LG SP520). So I opened that, found the movies by all the options shown therein and tried to play a movie. Unfortunately, it bounced back, unable to open the movie apparently. I figured since my movies are in mp4 format, I'd add the codecs for mp4, reboot and try again. Still no joy.

Unfortunately, the log file doesn't seem to shed any light on the problem:

Sounds like you might not have it setup correctly. Please post the ENTIRE log, and a copy of your setup.ini so we can look and see where it might need tweaked.

Also.. I've never heard of Plex. For my media sharing needs to my dad's Blu-ray player in the living room we use Serviio. I've not tried setting it up in GameEx though. I'm curious about Plex. Is it similar to Serviio? Dad's Blu-ray player tends to have issues with transcoding some high def stuff so I'm wondering if Plex might be better at it.

Hansolo77: Plex is a multimedia app that works through your browser. I needed it after I tried to set up my LG to access my server's folders and was getting network errors, as it doesn't like the way Windows does folder sharing. Are you sure that's the correct path for your video? If it is, you might need to put the whole path inside "" (quotation marks) since it has spaces in it.

That error is from the preview video player not the full screen player. Could you post the log trying to properly play a video? Also what codecs did you install?

Also on XP you sometimes have to enable uPNP. I can't remember where you do that. It might be a firewall setting or program feature.

I added uPNP through Windows Components and still no joy. BTW, the codecs I installed were media.player.codec.pack.v4.2.7. Since Gameex put so much emphasis on Media Center, it seemed logical to start with Media Center codecs.

Uninstalled Media center codecs, rebooted, then installed Vista shark, still no joy. After that, I tried to run a TV show that I'd specified that's not part of Plex, and still couldn't run the video, but the preview video was running fine.

Unfortunately live streaming is something that does not always work. It does try to live stream it but again it does not always work depending on the file, codec and codec settings.

Try VLC.. it's a low weight player that plays a lot of stuff Media Player doesn't. Don't really know why, but it's my go to player when things aren't working right.

Ok, I've mapped my network drives and ran it through the internal player. Most of my movies are m4v's, so I renamed them to mp4, same thing. The internal player tended to chatter, mostly due to my network throughput I expect. Switched to VLC and changed the resolution to not change and tried again. It seems to be working really well right now.

You might have to run them through a transcoder, or re-encode them to a more network friendly format like avi/mpg instead of something like m4v, mp4, mkv, etc. The problem is that with avi/mpg your files are going to be HUGE.. not really worth it if you can find some other alternative.
