While researching some other GameEx setup problems in this forum, I happened to notice that some were getting the following error:

14:25:17.2 2/3/2006: GameEx: Version 5.48: Starting Log

14:25:17.2 2/3/2006: Operating System Platform: Win32NT

14:25:17.2 2/3/2006: Operating System Name: Windows XP

14:25:17.2 2/3/2006: Operating System Version: 5.1.2600

14:25:17.2 2/3/2006: ERROR: An error occured while checking for previous instance of GameEx

14:25:17.2 2/3/2006: This can be caused by a bad windows or .net framework install.

14:25:17.2 2/3/2006: GameEx will likely function incorrectly as it cannot check for running processes

14:25:17.2 2/3/2006: GameEx will now exit with errors

14:25:17.2 2/3/2006: Application-defined or object-defined error.

14:25:17.2 2/3/2006: ERRORS DETECTED: EXITING

After seeing Tom's recommendation that .net or maybe even Windows might need to be reinstalled, I thought "I hope I never have that problem".

Unfortunately, my GameEx installation started producing that error last night. It was after I made a change to the input settings (turning on slikstik or direct input support, I'm not quite sure).

I tried Microsoft's procedure for doing a clean install of the 1.1 .NET framework (see Q306160 - How to repair and existing installation of the .NET framework). It didn't help.

Anybody had any luck solving this?

I think I would have to abandon using GameEx before doing another Windows install (my machine has way too much licensed code installed on it). That would be a shame since I really like the MAME interface (and I just sent Tom a small donation just a couple of hours before the error came up!).
