[RESOLVED] GameEx not seeing my old MAME games

Hello,

My hard drive crashed that had my MAME emulator and roms on it. My backup was DVDs. I have a very old version of MAME (actually MAME32) and select roms (around 0.97). When I reinstalled everything and pointed GameEx to the new drive not everything was working. My big mistake was when I updated my MAME game list. I had made a copy of a folder in GameEx called backup that had a file called gamelist in it. But putting that back in doesnâ??t seem to change anything. I know MAME has a habit of changing the roms names and I guess this is why GameEx canâ??t see my roms. The reason I never updated MAME was because I didnâ??t feel like doing all that work when the few games I actually wanted to play worked great. Is there anything I can do to make GameEx recognize my old rom set?

P.S. MAME32 does see all my roms and plays them fine outside of GameEx.

Thanks in advance,

Sty151

You should be able to just have GameEx update your game list. Look in the menu for it. Make sure you have your setup set so it only catches ROMs you have, rather than showing ALL ROMs. Should be pretty obvious. When GameEx finishes updating the list, you'll have a new "gamelist.ini".

You are using the same old version of MAME? You have to use the MAME version that matches your romset since MAME roms are constanly being redumped and changed. also in the setup wizard make sure all the filters are turned off.try those and let us know if it worked :)

Thanks for the replies

Hansolo77, updating my gamelist in GameEx is when my games got removed. Where is the gamelist.ini located? I'll try to replace it with the one from the backup folder to see what happens.

Mesk, yes the roms are the same version as the MAME I'm using (both from quite a few years ago). I'll turn off any filters and update again. I assume by filters you mean like no porn, only working etc.

What version of GameEX are using?

Yes there is a "use game filter" setting you will set that to "no"

also set i want clones,

allow imperfect games set to "yes",

only working games set to "no"

Thanks that fixed it. I changed "verify ROMS" to No, updated the games list and now I have more games than before. Now I just have to reinstall and get Daphne to work again "groan".

The thing that worries me here is why your roms are failing the audit. The games you found aren't going to run if they can't pass it, right?

I always have verify roms off,it takes way to long to update the list when verify roms is on

So far all the games I've tried have played. Admittedly, I haven't tried most of them (Iâ??m a little old and really only like to play the games I remember playing back in the day at the local Shakeyâ??s Pizza Parlor). Is there something else I can test?

Additionally (and this is a little off topic but) Pac-Man isn't showing up. I remember when I set my cabinet up like 5 years ago there was something I had to do for a couple of the games because the ROMs I wanted were actually considered clones (Puck-Man vs Pac-Man, etc) and I have GameEx set for no clones. I've done a few searches but nothing's jogging my memory.

the tough thing is with older MAME builds and romsets is that roms are constantly changing.I strongly recommend updating both MAME and its romset to something fairly modern.if you are using MAME under .107 you are bound to run in to all sorts of issues.just my 2 cents :)

Must add the rom to the Don't Filter These ROMS setting in Advance MAME Settings in the MAME Settings section.

By default that setting includes the following:

pacman;splatter

The help context for this setting is as follows:

Never filter the following ROMS (They will always appear in the list) Separate with a semi colon.

Thanks for all the help again everyone. I saw the "Don't Filter These Roms" setting but mine is empty. I'll put the default in and try it out. Feel free to mark this RESOLVED. I donâ??t see an option to change the name.
