Stustaff Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Hi allWell yeh so I'm new to mame and gameex and emus in general but I wanted to recapture my youth and play some of my favourites, so I downloaded gameex and decided to try it out.InstaL went fine and after a few teething problems I was able to sort most things out fine. But MAME has me beaten at the minute.I have put some rooms in to test it out and they don't seem to work! I select the game in gameex screen goes black and text comes up saying loading, but it either gets to 90ish percent or game loaded and then falls back into gameex.I assumed it may be a problem with rooms but have tried lots and some work fine and some don't.Eg galaxian fine, king of fighters none work.I'm running a year or so old PC and other emus like n64, amiga etc all run fine.I have checked the rooms are from the latest version 0.142...Not sure what else to do?AND on a side note in gameex thermos all just have the filename showing rather than the game name eg bubobl instead of Bubble Bobble. Thanks in advance foranyhelp.
celly Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 First off, welcome to GameEx! Now for your MAME issues, what version of MAME are you running? "Vanilla" MAME (no gui or frontend) or MAMEUI or some other MAME build? As for the roms not working, are they working with MAME outside of GameEx? Also, some games need multiple roms in order to form a 1 working rom game. For example, your King Of Fighters (or any Neo Geo MAME game) you will also need the neogeo rom file. Some roms also require a .chd file to make them run. As per the rules set at this forum I can not tell you where or direct you to where you can get this roms but google is quite a good tool.

Ah ok MAME is the one that was downloaded as part of my gameex set up.Hmm your right just tested no it looks like they aren't working outside of gameex, so it's a mame issue not gameex I guess! So I may have to use google to see if I can find missing stuff, do I put those things in the same folder as the roms? Thanks
Adultery Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Yes. It's a BIOS file to help you search ( neogeo.zip )Hope that helps!
Stustaff Posted July 22, 2011 Author Posted July 22, 2011 This all seems much more complicated than I remember! So what other bios would I need to get to make sure all games will work. And then I need to go and search for chd's is it an easier option to just use a version of mame that doesn't need the chd files?
Stustaff Posted July 22, 2011 Author Posted July 22, 2011 Thinking about this an older version of mame32 for example seems the most sensible solution, all the games I want to play used to work on that and I even have the old rom files around somewhere I think.
celly Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Well personally, I use MAMEUI64. It has a pretty easy to use GUI and you can see what is available based on current roms and what you do have in your set. And integrating it with GameEx is just as easy. You can always checkout MAWS and see what other roms are needed for which game you want to add to your MAME collection.

So you recommend mameui32 for a good start point?Do I just set it up in gameex as another emulator?
celly Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Thanks Celly yeh I think I'm going to start again and just add my gave games one by one. So you recommend mameui32 for a good start point?Do I just set it up in gameex as another emulator?I only recommend MAMEUI only as it is easy to setup. Some of the features I like, personally, and that is what I use for MAME.First setup MAMEUI outside of GameEx. Then when your all straight, open up the Setup Wizard. You can setup MAMEUI with the Setup Wizard under the MAME settings. Just show GameEx where your .exe file is, artwork, roms and so on and that's it. Once you open GameEx, under the MAME selection, scroll down to the bottom option and "Update List". It takes some time but it will then show all your MAME games in the list.
Stustaff Posted July 23, 2011 Author Posted July 23, 2011 Is there a simple way to find out what is needed for each game?Eg what bios and what if any chd? Also is there anyway to have gameex only show the games that work?
Adultery Posted July 24, 2011 Posted July 24, 2011 For your second question, yes you can tell GameEx to audit your ROMs and only allow working ones.
fRequEnCy Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Is there a simple way to find out what is needed for each game?Eg what bios and what if any chd? Also is there anyway to have gameex only show the games that work?Am sure there are other ways of finding out what is needed for each game but the best thing to do it to make sure you have all the bioses so that you're covered. And if obtaining 1 game at a time then use the source celly suggested (MAWS). Some games are clones which may require the parent rom depending how your roms are built, and that's a whole other subject matter.
Stustaff Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 thanks all I had a bit of a break as was and am getting very frustrated!Say i want to play 1 game I have the ROM file and its the right version and I have MAMEUI32 and i have the Bios but it still wont play because i need the CHD but i cant find it anywhere! unless i imagine downloading one of the 200GB files just for one CHD!Because the games i am interested in arent new games and they played great 10 years ago without CHD im really struggling with it all.whats the last set before CHD's were introduced? I suppose i could just get that set?
