After not using my MAME cab for a couple months I fired it up a month or so ago and it asked if it could update, which I allowed, but every time I have started it up since then it asks AGAIN if it can update. I've allowed it a few times just to see if it fixed the problem on its own, but so far no luck. Any suggestions?

The majority of the roms I had were from an even earlier version than I thought, and I had been adding newer ones and squeezing them in to see if they acted any different, which is obviously not a good starting point. As far as reinstalling GameEx over the top, do I need to do any removing of old files or anything, or do I just start the installation from the beginning and let it take over?

Assuming an "over the top" Install of GameEx mean just reinstalling now that all these changes are made, I'll do both of those things tonight. Thanks for all the help thus far.

What are CHDs, by the way? And referring to my previous question, are those supporting files important in getting some ROMs to actually work? I really thought that having the MAME version and ROMset matching would get me better results, but I still only have a fraction functioning...

Here's another question I must have thought of while I was sleeping, because I woke up wondering this: Does it matter what file I put all my ROMS in as long as GameEx is directed to that file? Or is MAME itself sensitive to that in any way?

Ok. I'll be following those suggestions this weekend. A question about those support files, like the history.dat and those things, could the lack of all of those files be to blame for certain roms not working? I found out that the place I get my ROMs has them all updated to MAME.158, so I downloaded that exact MAME release and pointed GameEx to it. At this point I would say 1 in 20 well-known games are woking. The rest say something like "LOADING 0%" briefly and then cut to black, eventually taking me back to GameEX. So is the addition and proper placement of those files a measure that halps the user have more information about the game they are playing, or are those actually essential in the functionality of some ROMS?

This is so interesting to me. So the best way for me to know what version of MAME my ROMset corresponds with is just to see if I can find out from the place I obtained the ROMs? Aand what is my next step after I align my MAME version with my ROMset? Are there a series of toubleshooting steps you can take with each individual non-working ROM to see if you can gain some functionality? And can adding the appropriate files like history.dat actually help MAME run certain ROMS it had trouble with, or are those more for keeping GameEx orderly?

Is there not a way to assign a different version of MAME to open up when you select a game, one that is older but at least works for that specific game? Probably a stupid question but I'm still trying to understand how to even know which ROMs are considered up-to-date with the latest version of MAME...

So I decided to go through the Wizard and reset all the stuff I was using to defaults since I was having better luck before I messed with stuff, and I now have about 600 ROMs showing up, many of them working. Should I now start switching the values you just mentioned, or is that the wrong direction now that I have better results than before?

At this point I am seeing a little over a thousand available ROMs, I just cannot get ANYTHING to play through GameEx. I have MAME32, MAMEUI32 and MAMEUI64 available as my MAME executables, and I am pretty much just switching between them to see if I can get anything to work. Up to this point I have been scared to change anything else, so I'll get into the configuration and mess with the toggles and see what I can get. Thanks.

So far I am experimenting with leading GameEx to different versions of MAME to try and run the ROMs that were working earlier, and I am having no luck. But when I run them without GameEx now, they work fine. Both with MAME32 and MAMEUI roms are now working outside GameEx but not inside. There must be something that needs to be switched...

I'll start on that right now. So there isn't anything that jumps out as a reason that I would gain so many available ROMs but lose functionality? Seems like and odd thing to have happen, but what do I know...

If there were one there, how do I know if it matches my romset? my Roms pretty much all came as single large downloaded zipfiles from "somewhere". As I said, everything was working great until I was able to get more games to show up, then I lost some functionality. Those files you mentioned, like catver.ini, what are those? do I download those from somewhere and place them in their assigned positions in the Gameex or MAME files? Your going a bit fast for me. I'm fairly familiar with emulation in general, but MAME is a whole different animal to me...
