  1. Hmm. I believe I have set all of it up then. There's a mobile GPU on board so it 'should' be using that. I have modded windows a bit though only visually (custom start up splash screen). I don't have any standard features disabled. My driver's and such should be up to date but i'll go through and manually update everything. If that doesn't work then I'm putting a new PC for the cabinet together soon regardless. (I had wanted to make a pre-configured image of Game Ex and my full system before hand). Since this is going to be fixed one way or the other I'll mark this as resolved. Thank you guys very much.
  2. The PC is a spare laptop it is a mobile GPU. it has run game EX in the past with no issue. I will be switching over to a PC with a desktop gpu in the near future. Yeah. I can't follow the directions for getting that config file. They're clear and concise. but physically not possible in my situation. In addition since I didn't have an emulator on the list I tried to add mame... again even though it was already configured a few steps before so I'm not clear on why I would need to spend time on it again, and it wanted to download mame. Even though again, it was set up in it's entirety a few steps before. So that doesn't seem like it's what I'm looking for. but it is what those instructions say to do. Based on all of that I don't even see how that config file is related to anything since the method described for getting it seems to point towards software that's not being used in the first place. is there a file name for the general 'no emulators other than mame' set up? As odd as it sounds i might just format my hard drive and restart. typing this up from a mini keyboard while hunched over the bottom of my cabinet is more frustrating than troubleshooting the problem. (i don't mind how long that takes, it'll be worth it). Sorry if I seem angsty. this is like trying to post from a cell phone.
  3. Just looking at those directions makes my eyes bleed (for the config file) I do not have the export option available it's greyed out. I was under the impression that when I spend 8 minutes inputting mame directories I had configured mame and then when I said what amounted to 'only ever use mame' that I wouldn't have to do any more than that. This works VERY different from how I remember it but that was many years ago. I honestly don't have the slightest clue on how to give you that config file in spite of the directions being posted. Is there a specifically named ini file or something that I can directly to instead of... that? Or do I have do some strange 'set mame up twice' thing? I want to give you the config, but apparently I can't. GameEX ini
  4. Game EX works great on my development PC, however it will not load on my cabinet PC. Here's my log: I'm all ears if anyone has any ideas.
  5. I am already signed into the steam client before launching Game Ex. I actually don't see any reference to it other than inside the set up. Is it a pay feature or is it listed somewhere unique? I looked through all available listings and could not see a reference. It seems that Game EX Evolution is haunting me with it's awesome features. I'd buy it if it was available. And I will when it is. *edit* It's actively supported software, may as well pay now*
  6. I want to do a few things. I haven't been able to find them in the settings so I don't know if they're possible; 1. I would like to change (a) all menu and list items from text to images. Or ( change all list items to images at the least. - I thought I had found a setting for this but I haven't noticed a change. 2. If possible, I wish to disable the 'change view' option in the menu. Is this possible without disabling that entire menu? 3. I enabled steam support to check it out. I know my login details are correct but no steam related content shows up in Game EX. This leads me to assume that I may be missing a step. It is set to enabled, my login info is entered; What else do I need to do? Thanks for reading. Stay classy!
  7. Well. I'll cross my fingers then. I had used G-EX years and years ago (see how old my account here is) I switched to HS because it was 'flashier' decided to give G-EX another try to see what's changed and you can do quite a bit with it. There was probably a lot I was missing the first time around. I don't believe the 3d rotating arcade cabinets were in the last time I used it. I'll need to disable those. Only because they don't mesh with the theme I'm making, it's a pretty cool feature. I remember seeing an trailer for Evolution a while ago. I actually initially 'came back' because I thought it was out, and then downloaded Game Ex to start digging around and maybe make some themes. I really hope there's a wheel. Or a multi-directional cover flow element. That would certain be great and could be set up as a wheel. For now, I'll place my theme on hold until I can figure out how to do a wheel or at least vertical image menu. And be anxious for Evolution to come out.
  8. Image creation is no issue for me, what I'm trying to do is set up a wheel like Hyperspin has.. I'll just take a screenshot of what I have so far; http://i.imgur.com/0YvrqFf.jpg So in that space on the right hand side, I'm trying to set up a wheel that if possible follows the curvature in place. and acts sort of like a wheel of fortune wheel. I'm also wondering if I can replace all of the text menu items with image based buttons? Thanks for your reply. High five to you good sir.
  9. Is there a compiled guide. This thing is a little bit of a challenge to use. mainly because the naming conventions don't really match up with similar software.
  10. Perhaps this is already covered, but a search did not yield an answer; Is it possible to use a video file as a theme background? For example in the 'start' area the background will be one video file, going through a loop, and then if you were to enter the MAME section, it would change to another video file? This is not a reference to avi snap files, the avi snaps would play in their usual location while the background video continued to loop, much like the way the 'Dreamscene' functionality in windows Vista works/worked.
  11. Yeah, I installed it on a new partition (with it's own OS install) and it works fine. so I'll just put Game EX on the backburner for now then once my HTPC is ready (soon) I'll be putting it on there.
  12. Ok thank you, tried those... same thing happens. I see a list load up but it closes itself immediately afterwards. I wish windows event viewer wasn't a POS. I was trying to use it to see if I could find out what specifically was closing gameex.exe... god forbid you might want to have information on system processes. *shrug*
  13. I'd like to try this but cannot find a setting listed as 'media insertion' or 'check for media insertion' and I went through every page. maybe I missed it or miss understood, could you tell me what it's listed as and what part of the settings it's in?
  14. I have no idea how I can update direct x, I have vista ultimate and DX10 is integrated, but I'll look and try to update/reinstall it if I can. if that doesn't work I'm due for a format soon anyway, and in the end game ex will be running on a different set of hardware. Just sucks because now I have to use the MameUI...ui (which isn't bad but game ex is better) Thanks everyone.
  15. Ok, I've done the following; Uninstalled Game EX, Deleted it's folder from the hard drive, entered the registry and removed any key seemingly related to game ex, run a registry cleaner, restarted the computer. After which I tried game ex with the latest version of mame from mamedev.org, and alternatively, i tried the latest version of mameui32 in conjunction with Game EX. The same thing happens each time. Game EX Opens, plays the intro sound, begins to load the interface, and I see it for a split second before an actual game or selection list comes up and then it closes. here is the latest log.txt; 17:05:34.4 06/01/2009: GameEx: Version 9.79: Starting Log 17:05:34.5 06/01/2009: Operating System Platform: Win32NT 17:05:34.5 06/01/2009: Operating System Name: Windows Vista 17:05:34.5 06/01/2009: Operating System Version: 6.0.6001 17:05:34.5 06/01/2009: Vista Aero running 17:05:34.5 06/01/2009: Initializing Vista volume control 17:05:34.5 06/01/2009: Checking for versions of .net Framework installed 17:05:34.5 06/01/2009: .net Framework 1.1 Installed 17:05:34.5 06/01/2009: .net Framework 2.0 Installed 17:05:34.6 06/01/2009: Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 2.80GHz, 2047MB 17:05:34.6 06/01/2009: 2.79Ghz 17:05:34.7 06/01/2009: Running Randomize() 17:05:34.7 06/01/2009: Loading PlugIns 17:05:34.8 06/01/2009: Checking for applications to Launch On Startup 17:05:34.8 06/01/2009: Running Misc startup tasks 17:05:34.9 06/01/2009: Setting Menu types 17:05:34.9 06/01/2009: Opening Configuration File 17:05:34.9 06/01/2009: Getting Configuration Values 17:05:34.9 06/01/2009: Using Theme: Default - Media Center 17:05:34.9 06/01/2009: Checking for alternate Image Directory for Theme: Default - Media Center 17:05:34.9 06/01/2009: Using Images from theme: Default - Media Center V1\MEDIA\ 17:05:35.0 06/01/2009: Launching HideOS.exe 17:05:35.0 06/01/2009: Initialising Video/MNG DLL's 17:05:35.2 06/01/2009: GameEx will check for media insertion (may affect performance) 17:05:35.2 06/01/2009: Hiding Taskbar 17:05:35.3 06/01/2009: Is Media Center running? 17:05:35.3 06/01/2009: Checking/Creating LCD Registry values 17:05:35.4 06/01/2009: Check Media Center Exit/Start Mode 17:05:35.4 06/01/2009: Media Center Mode 2 17:05:35.5 06/01/2009: Video previews on. 16. I had been using that ancient mame32 for a long time, I guess I'll compile a new one, hopefully that's the problem.
  17. Yep. I uninstalled, removed any trace I could find in the registry, removed the folder and purged the recycling bin, restarted, then reinstalled. I'm starting to think this might not actually be caused by gameex itself. maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

  19. Hi dudes, I've been using game ex for a while and recently, not sure why, it will load up the nag screen, it will show the intro and immediately after it will close, with no error window, just close. I want to troubleshoot it because it was working before but I can't find any error dialogue or anything to start from, I was about to register it until this happened, once it's fixed I'll likely hop on registering since I'm getting ready to build a vista media center powered... media center computer for my entertainment system. Anyone have any idea on what might be happened or where to look to find out why it's just abruptly closing? Things of note: I have already uninstalled, purged all traces of it from my registry following the uninstall, restarted the computer, and reinstalled it. It still abruptly closes. Thanks guys.
  20. It might be worth it. I'm going on some for my own theme right now, I'm not sure how well they'll mesh with others but I'll still share them when they're done. I'd personally go with MNG's myself, thats what I'm doing as they can be made to blend more, or so I'd think. I'm honestly not sure if it'd be worth paying, I'm sure they'll pop up over time, but if you can find someone who will follow through it would most likely speed up the process.
  21. Yes an s-video cable should allow you to connect it to your tv so long as your tv has an s-video input, but one thing you may need to check before you go buy a cable is if the plug on your video card and tv look exactly the same, if so you may need an adapter. The surest way to do this would be perhaps to get a tv tuner card, but you should also be able to do it with S-Video. If the connection works your tv will work just like your monitor but you should know that unless your tv is an HDTV it will need a resolution far lower than most monitors (think 320 x 240) however a fair amount of the arcade games seem to run at around there or lower. You should be able to do it, windows won't look as sharp as it might on an lcd. That's how I have my second 'cabinet' running. it's actually a small form factor media center PC that's connected to my entertainment system and pretty much operates like a console.

Yep. in the configuration program go to an empty emulator slot, under 'import emulator' choose 'PC Microsoft windows' then adjust the names and locations to your liking. put your shortcut links in it's 'roms' folder. also make sure you check the settings on the other pages in that emulator's settings. the 'working path' should be to the folder at, or just before your roms. or links.
  23. If you happen to be using MAMEUI to interface with Game EX you can do the following; Options > Interface Options On the right, inside the window there is an 'Emulation Options' area. Check the following; Skip Disclaimer, and for good measure also check off 'Skip Game info'. Now when you launch games from inside Game EX, or the screensaver runs it will go right into the game. Alternatively as others have suggested, compile your own MAME.
  24. Suggestion; The option to have menus scroll horizontally, rather than vertically. Reason; While making a theme I wanted to do something that looked very similar to how one 'scrolls' through the games in Super Mario All-Stars' but it does not currently appear to be possible Suggestion: In relation to that the option of replacing normal text buttons with png's that can be used as Icons. Because I'm usually bad at explaining things in words (I'm a concept artist, my brain consists of cartoons and cereal), I've included this horribly done photo representation; I'm not sure how to make it attach an image properly but here it is (ok nevermind it just wasn't showing up with the preview. http://www.gameex.info/forums/index.php?ac...ost&id=4348
  25. Lol. I am going to check that right now. I didn't remember that being a setting. I will edit my post momentarily so you can be amused by my foolishness. Edit: Ok, thank you very much for your help, not sure how I missed that but yes, that was the issue. I appreciate the assistance.
