If you use your GameEx computer for something else than gaming (ex: a home theater PC), it is primordial to use a newer version of FFDSHOW, especially if you plan to use it in conjuction with matroska splitter or mp4 splitter...
-
After a few hours discovering all GameEx can do, you'll feel "cheap" just to give 22$...
-
Indeed, Webguide is a fantastic piece of software... If I may suggest something to try (with MediaControl) is MyMovies. Maybe you already know about it, if not, It is worth a look especially with your gigantic movies collection!!!

Simple good IT behavior: Don't install something you don't need. Technically, all you need in an HTPC that'll play downloaded movies (H264, VC1, MP4, matroska containers, mp4 containers), DVD, BluRay discs, is FFDShow, Haali Media Splitter and maybe QuickTime Alternative. CCCP, is a great "combo", but you're never sure how these components interact together... especially if you use a AV receiver to decode your AC3 and DTS via S/PDIF. More: IllSeeYouInHell was talking earlier about one of the greatest plugin for VMC: MediaControl. This fantastic tool is known to be broken when you combine it with CCCP or any other codec pack. I'm not a programmer neither an expert. Just a guy who wants to keep is HTPC as light as possible and understand what is installed. I'm honestly happy that CCCP works well with your (and probably most) setup. But with my experience, it was problematic (go see the MediaControl forum for examples). Also, if you go x64 like I did, you'll realize that CCCP can't help you there, you must find all the filters individually and register the DLLs manually and creat your MIME associations (except for FFDshow, that got his own x64 build). When CCCP goes x64, I promise I'll give it a try! Regards.

If you build an HTPC, stay away from codecs packs like CCCP. Anyway, in FFDshow configuration menus, there's a section to hide the tray icon, no need for a 3rd party. Haali Media Splitter offers also an option to hide the tray icon.

So we'll wait anxiously that Tom takes a look at this thread... hehe

Hi guy! Yesterday, a friend, running a nicely built cabinet asked me if I knew a way to « jump » into the game that the screensaver is playing (MAME or consoles). He finds this very « teasing » to see a game that looks cool but you never played; and when you press a button, youâ??re back in gameex without knowing what was the game. A few toughts : Is there a way to display the name of the game at the bottom of the screen? Could we press a combination of buttons to get in the game?
-
It is not a solution itself, but have you tried disabling the button bar, just to see if the problem goes away? Also, what codec(s) are necessary for viewing NetFlix? What is installed right now?
-
Thx! I was naively thinking that the optimize options were making the compiled binary running the games faster!
-
Hmm, I've never really timed the compiling time. But I'll check next time. Quick question for HeadKaze: When I optimize my mame64 build for Core 2 Duo, Dual-Core and/or Quad-Core, what is happening in the background? Is it really faster with theses processors/cores? Is it about SSE3?

The GameEx Database Project
lalandev replied to headkaze's topic in FAQs, Guides, & Other Useful Information
Thx Flash for the Atari databases! Was looking to play a few excellent games on these consoles... As usual: great work. -
Hehe, english not being my primary language, emoticons, Internet, forums... wow! I'm overwhelmed! No probs, it is just that I've read and worked very hard on the codecs topics, and It is fascinating and complex. The only problem is, more often than never, when I post something about codecs combinations, splitters, filters, there's always a smacktard who says: "I've installed Vista Codec Pack and everything is running perfectly!" It is sooooo much more complex than that, especially if your running an HTPC and using an SPDIF and/or HDMI output to an AV receiver. Anyway, I'm way off topic... Regards

Hey guys, was just trying to help... Filmerit is a great tool, if your computer got worse, maybe there was other problems in deeper in it. Honestly, codecs are complicated piece of software, shit happens! But I will not blame Filmerit for your problem...
-
If I may suggest, run Filmerit, it is a small tool that scan your audio/video filters installed to see if there's conflicts or old entries not deleted. Normally, if you mess with FFDshow (change/backtrack version), sometimes it breaks something. Don't forget to reboot after using Filmerit.
-
1. Are you running XP or Vista? 2. 32 or 64bit? 3. What codecs are installed? 4. Uninstall them 5. You should install the FFDShow version recommanded in the GameEx FAQ under the section «Q: My preview videos don't play. I just get black with sound.»
-
I think the answer is no. But, why do you want to keep them in separate folders?
-
The best tool to see what codecs are installed is Filmerit: http://paul.glagla.free.fr/filmerit_en.htm To know with which codec a file as been encoded, you can use Gspot... a little bit outdated but still useful: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ And if you don't like installing Codec Pack (usually lots of garbage in it), you can use this "combo" FFDShow Tryouts: http://free-codecs.com/FFDShow_download.htm Haali Media Splitter: http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/ Install both with defaults options, and you should be able to play around everything "standard" on P2P networks...

I've just installed the 1.17 version and ticked the "Disable Warnings ar Error" box. Everything is now compiling properly. Thx for the quick intervention!

Someone succeded compiling 127.u6 x64? On my side, it crashes after 2 minutes with this error: c:\mingw\source\mame0127s\src\emu\machine\ldcore.c(911) : error C2220: warning treated as error - no 'object' file generated c:\mingw\source\mame0127s\src\emu\machine\ldcore.c(911) : warning C4701: potentially uninitialized local variable 'vbidata' used mingw32-make: *** [obj/winui/vmame/emu/machine/ldcore.o] Error 2 BTW, I use Head's tool since 3-4 months and I never had any problems before... Maybe something changed and the compiler can't compile this release? (stupid assumption, I know, but hey, I'm no programmer!(

Tom will correct me if I'm wrong. But I've read on thegreenbutton.org forums that the API that drives the "GUI" of Vista Media Center is hard to "reverse engineer". So, you can code something similar, but to look exactly like it, it would take a lot of effort. Anyway, I prefer, by far, that Tom put his (btw so generous) time and effort in added fonctionality and generally improving GameEx. Just my 2 cent. Regards.

On my Vista x64 box, I had a few issues compiling the x64 version. I can't explain why, but after a couple minutes of troubleshooting, I've installed .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 and for me, it solved the problem. But as Head explains in the tutorial, you still have a few "99 errors" at the beginning. But after a few "GO" clicks, it goes away and compile properly. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...0e-4cd851c5fcc4 Good luck!

Great idea! Maybe my idea sounds weird, but is there a company who builds gamepad with a small track ball that you can use with your thumb (something similar to some Internet Keyboard)?
-
Hi guys! Since Flash finished the Scumm DB (great work BTW) I'm eager to setup ScummVM on my HTPC. I'm pretty proud to say that my box is stable enough that I can throw my keyboard and mouse in the basement and only use the Logitech Harmony to operate it (duh, I know that it is the point of an HTPC). But how many friends I know have a bluetooth keyboard always available to fix... one... more... thing... hehe So, I don't want a mouse in my living room, and I want to play Scumm games... What are your impressions/suggestions of using a (Ex: Logitech DualAction) as a pointing device in Scumm games...

Do you mean: using an external player's CODEC? or simply "ask" GameEx to minimize and use (for example) PowerDVD to play your files? If the you want to use the codec of the external player, it should be available as a drop-down item in HTPC menu in GameEx. If you mean using directly the external player, I don't have a clue, maybe the big boys can join in the discussion!
