MAME Live Arcade Scoreboard, a cool feature for GameEx perhaps?

A gamer named torino has been testing a "Live Arcade Scoreboard" for MAME in the thread below.

Maybe this could be a very cool feature for GameEx, dont know if it could be programmed "easily" into into GameEx?

I know i would personally start using it right away, to compare my scores with fellow gamers around the world, right in my cabinet.

What do you guys think?

"We can share hi-scores via public web-folder. With the help of HiToText utility simple .BAT script can update local hi-scores with server scoreboard and publish our own records back to server by merging all the current scores automatically. The point of this would simply be so that everyone can see current competition scoreboard right there in the game itself, which kind of makes it more interesting and motivating to break someone else's record.

Yeah, you need to have MAME enabled for hi-score support, which includes having a "hiscore.dat" and "hi" folder."

At one point Tom was going to setup a server for doing this back when HiToText first came out. The main issue was always how easy it would be to cheat. It wouldn't be hard to implement this feature though.

I for 1 would also use this feature, as to cheaters, you will always have them, but my view is if they cheat they are only cheating them selves but would give people an insentive to try and beat it legitimately.

+1 from me as well! Have to agree with Ian about cheaters - you can't stop them. Overall scores will average out. Perhaps it could refresh every month, quarter, or year so a new leaderboard is established. I wonder if it would be possible to read the mame.ini to determine if cheats are enabled and flag those scores to a separate "Wall of Shame" from the legitimate leaderboard? :P

Probably would be, but command-line would be a workaround for that.

But command line would be stored where....? Would that not be in the Mame setup within GameEx.ini? If setup, I would imagine that it would be limited to games launched through GameEx and not Mame command-line or GUI.

I meant that the switch wouldn't show up in MAME.INI, so users other than GameEx could essentially cheat and get away with it. ;)

A little customization could wind up on a GameEx specific score board though... *ponders*

Now you are following my leader! This feature would be GameEx-specific and track Mame hi scores for games launched via GameEx!

You have my vote on this as well! I think I requested a similar feature once. This features is something I've always wanted. A Leaderboard type thing :D

Why? So you can see my name everytime you play a game?
