bad windows or bad framework or..........

Recommended Posts

Well put me on the list Tom, bad windows install or bad framework. My framework is the 1.1 version. My version of Windows is XP however it is XP Lite, a custom version I made with some tools so it would run faster without needless bloat. However it might be the culprit I dunno yet. Tomorrow I will try a normal install of XP, but I will then start removing component by component and service by service as far as the ones I deem unnecassary for me. During this process I will monitor what happens to GameEx and narrow down which service(s)/component(s) effect its performance and what has given me this error today

Note I have copied and pasted someone elses log of awhile back but mine says the exact samething, except with the newer version

13:58:40.1 04/11/2005: GameEx: Version 5.15: Starting Log

13:58:40.2 04/11/2005: Operating System Platform: Win32NT

13:58:40.2 04/11/2005: Operating System Name: Windows XP

13:58:40.2 04/11/2005: Operating System Version: 5.1.2600

13:58:40.2 04/11/2005: ERROR: An error occured while checking for previous instance of GameEx

13:58:40.2 04/11/2005: This can be caused by a bad windows or .net framework install.

13:58:40.2 04/11/2005: GameEx will likely function incorrectly as it cannot check for running processes

13:58:40.2 04/11/2005: GameEx will now exit with errors

13:58:40.2 04/11/2005: Error definido por la aplicación o por el objeto.

13:58:40.2 04/11/2005: ERRORS DETECTED: EXITING

And that spanish tid bit is in english I believe

Well, I spend 5 days out of the week cleaning spyware and viruses off computers and I a lot of time debugging new things that come out off and on. So I will try my best to find the cause GameEx error.

I am surprised though Tom, that you could not make this program generate a more specific error as to what file, dll or service/component it is having an issue with beyond framework. There's a weak link in there somewhere. And for most people I doubt reinstalling is the solution they want. I'm a computer tech and not even I like reinstalling windows, mainly because if it is not exactly how the customer had it, programs and settings password wise they throw a fit.....

Stuff I know atm, Last 4 File entries is most important, and most if not all registry entires, appears like most registry entries are related to .NET, it might be interesting to, compare users registry files who have this issue with another to insure .NET consistancy in the registry? Maybe even creat a batch file to input all .NET framework entries in after in install to insure they're in the registry?

dunno what KSENUM is atm... just know it doesn't show up repeatedly in other programs. Other strange things appear to be Spooler and RemoteAccess?

Other interesting things is that running GameEx under win98 compatiability in XP causes a CLR error(whether it works or not), running it in NT mode on a non-working computer causes it to run in the background at around 80-90% cpu usage I think but no window or display for it ever comes up, but cpu usage was about right for if it was running, because on a working machine I am able to run it in NT mode in XP and it runs the same way but of course this time I can actually see the window pop-up.

I hope that bit of info might be able to help you tom or narrow my search so I can be of some assistance in troubleshooting this annoying re-occurance.

Also GameEx does not shutdown properly whiel running in NT mode, you have to end it in task manager.

Hi,

Its not a problem of where the error is occuring, as you can see from the log, I put in special code to trap it. It is a case of why it is happening. I am 99.9% sure it is because of your 'special' install. Basically this error occurs when GameEx trys to look at running processess using the diagnostic namespace in the .net framework. It's not a specific GameEx problem, its something on the PC that stops this part of the .net framework from working. If you can tie it down to a particular service or component that would be great, then I can document it for others.

I am not concerned GameEx does not run under the modes your talking about, I can see no instance when it would be useful to run GameEx that way? but thanks for letting me know.

thx, I did some googling for diagnostic namespaces to narrow down exactly what it uses and this is what I found

"See, there is a difference in linking libraries and importing

namespaces. The reason you didn't see difference in the reference list

is because System.Diagnostic namespace is half in mscorlib.dll and half

in System.dll, that are already included in the list of references.

Namespaces do not map to assemblies directly. e.g. most of "System"

namespace is in mscorlib.dll, not in System.dll. All the namespaces in

..NET BCL are included in something like 8 DLLs."

As I can see those dll files are in use on my working station, I just need to do a search on the non working machine to see if I have them and if I do see if they're in the right location(s).

mscorlib.dll shows up twice, system.dll shows up twice

Here is the link where I got that info I put in quotations

http://64.233.187.104/search?q=cache:RcmSy...endencies&hl=en

Also I can check to see if any services should also be using those dll files, since my lite version is lacking many normal services and components. Sorry if your getting annoyed about everything I am posting cuz I am sure most of it is not new to you, you wrote the thing lol, but it helps keep me on track so I have a reference point of stuff I have found out, guess I could make a word document too lol.

More info that may or may not be useful

http://64.233.187.104/search?q=cache:h2Dt6...ystem.dll&hl=en

The second showing off the mscorlib.dll and system.dll is generated by GameEx and deleted upon exiting...

Well guess that is enough playing around, I guess I will have to work backwards and start picking WinXP apart after doing a normal install...

I'm guessing this problem is just down to one disabled (and in your case removed too) service. I tend to disable a lot of services when I'm setting up systems, but I dont bother with using software to remove files from windows. I don't think there's much to be gained from that, when you can just as simply disable what you dont need. All I can see it saving is possibly a few meg on your hard disk and a slightly smaller registry. I can see 'that' kind of software has uses for special applications, possibly even a shelled arcade box (if your running an 800MHZ CPU with 10 GB Hard Disk or something), or for a dumb terminal for use at an airport/kiosk or internet cafe. But I have to ask, do you really believe your getting some great kind of performance increase doing what your doing over just disabling and not hacking your windows install? I just cant believe you are. Keep plugging away though if you like, but I recommend you do a normal xp install, Uninstall all the stuff you can from add/remove programs. Disable non essential services. Remove startup apps from the registry, and save yourself a lot of hassle, and run GameEx at the same time! If you get everything setup perfectly, then look at shelling. Or even once you have GameEx setup in a good test environment with everything setup perfectly, then build your ultimate streamlined system and simply copy over the config and games. I'm not at all annoyed that your trying to help and are looking at resolving the problem, but I really can no way support hacked OS's. UNLESS youve taken the time to do it in a planned organised way. IE Test System > Production System.

Well yea my system is an old 700mhz celeron, 384mb of ram, gf2 64mb,30gb hdd lol so I am trying to cut corners, I have a much better old system(1.8ghz AMD, 512mb, 80gb, will use gf2 unless I buy a new one) but currently one of my friends is holding my power supply that I let them borrow hostage...... so til I get that power supply back....

Well, I am basicly only wanting to remove the very largest components that I know I will not use and yes I will just disable the other services. I cannot remember what all I did to my first XP Lite cd because I made it over a year ago. So this round I have only put in a few reg tweaks into my XP cd and left everything else alone....

I guess you could say my super old machine is my guinie pig and I am going to set it up first and build the arcade shell then later I will put the better system in it. And if I don't get too fustrated with building the arcade I may build another one for the old system so I have two and maybe I can make my money back on time and money spent =).

Well I just tried a full install with a few reg tweaks and even disabled a number of services after installing framework 1.1 and directx 9c and it all works great.

Do you think that the install process for framework may be affected by disabled services? oh well it works just fine now, thanks for a great program.

by the way if anyone knows a working method to open roms in 1964 it'd be much appreciated!
