So, my old modded Xbox with XBMC and a ton of emulators is beginning to die, so I built a new HTPC. After some research I found my way to GameEx and was able to get a complete MAME 1.41 setup going without too many hiccups at all. Its awesome! Now I am turning my attention to the other systems. On the Xbox you had one or two real choices for most systems. On Windows, there are way more options. I recognized FCE Ultra because I ran a port of that on Xbox, but so far I'm having some issues getting it to run in full-screen on a 16:9 TV without stretching. Near as I can tell there is no way to make it display in 1080P but retain the original 4:3 aspect ratio. This lead me to the broader question of "Which ones are 'the best'?"

What emulators are you guys running? Anyone else running a 16:9 and/or 1080 display?

Hello and welcome to the forums. This topic has been done many times. Here's a few links to start with that the search feature has turned up:

There are many suggestions there to what us senior members suggest. Also on my signature I have a list of suggested emulators with their command-line needed to run in GameEx. I need to do some updates to it but gives you an idea.

To answer your 2nd question, yes I run on a 16:9 1080 display and all works well. Just takes some tweaking on the emulators part to give the results you're after like maintaining aspect ratio or actually stretching to fill the screen. If you have any questions then feel free to ask. ;)

I figure I may as well post what emulators I run on my HTPC in this thread...

Atari 2600: Stella

Atari 7800: MESS

Atari Lynx: Mednafen

Bandai Wonderswan/Color: Mednafen

NEC PC Engine: Mednafen

Nintendo 64: Mupen64Plus

NES: Mednafen

Nintendo FDS: Mednafen

Nintendo Gameboy Advance: Mednafen

Nintendo Gameboy/Color: Mednafen

Nintendo SNES: ZSNES

PSX: ePSXe

Sega 32X: Kega Fusion

Sega CD: Kega Fusion

Sega Game Gear: Mednafen

Sega Genesis: Kega Fusion

Sega Master System: Mednafen

SNK Neo Geo Pocket/Color: Mednafen

Turbo Grafx CD: Mednafen

Mednafen supports a ton of systems, as you can see, and its lack of a GUI doesn't really matter when using it with a frontend like GameEx. I actually just point GameEx to this single batch file which handles all my decompression, memory card/JoyToKey config swapping, etc.

So far as aspect ratios and such, I have an "emulator" setup up that just points to a bunch of batch files I made. They change the resolution/refresh rate, but also decompress emulator config files (And PC game configs) over my emu folder to match whatever resolution is selected. Example.
