first of all, i absolutely love that such a program exists.

question 1) is there a way to disable the feature where the escape key immediately exits out of the emulator and back to the frontend? i'd love to rebind this feature to perhaps the q key or something, but sometimes i want to use the emulator's own escape feature. it's a bit frustrating being booted out of the emulator completely when i simply want to tweak some settings.

question 2) all of the mame roms in my library are registering as the name of the .zip file as opposed to the name of the game itself. for example, street fighter alpha shows up as sfa. i'd prefer to have the name displayed, but the only way to do this it seems is to rename the .zip file, which breaks mame's ability to open the file completely.

question 3) no matter what i do, no games show up under my sega cd [fusion] folder. i've tried using .zip, .rar, and folders, but no dice. do i need to just dump the entire contents of each folder into one messy huge folder? these games require not only the .iso file, but also the .mp3 files associated with them.

thanks for the great program whoeveryouare. i just need some help.

1. Set Map Keys to No in that Emulator Setup section. Quoting the Help/Documentation section of the main site...

Map Keys

Set MapKeys to true to close the applications process if Back or Escape are pressed. If this is on when the button or key is pressed, the application will close and focus will return to GameEx. This won't work if Command is a batch file.

2. GameEx should be generating the name for your roms. But without posting any info then we can not see what's going on. Post your log. Have you rebuilt your list found at the bottom of the MAME menu in GameEx? Let's start with the log and then go from there.

3. If your games are in folders from what it seems like you're saying according to your post then you need to enable that feature by setting Scan Sub Folders to Yes in that Emulator Setup section.

is there a way to let the 'back' key work as intended, while simply disabling the escape key?

also, i'm not exactly sure what you mean by 'rebuilt your list found at the bottom of the mame menu in gameex". is that somewhere during the setup wizard? or through teh frontend itself.

how exactly can i obtain one of these log files?

oh..and if i didn't mention it already, thanx for the help.

Well disabling that would disable both keys. You can use an advanced config to exit out using the keys you desire. Or you can always script something to work.

If you click on my signature, you will find a link 'How to show all mame roms' (Or something like that) it will tell you how to 'Update List'

Follow my sig again to a link called 'How to ask for help' it will tell you how to 'Post Your Log'.

hrm...bit of a snag here. i've set 'map keys' to 'no' on each emulator, yet pressing escape still quits out of the emulator and launches me back into gameex.

here's the 'log' info

also, i've attempted to 'update list' while in gameex, but it hangs at about 25% of reading listinfo.dat. any ideas? (i posted this problem in another topic as well...oops. sorry.)

Well running that particular emulator will still exit using escape since that's how it was written. If having issues with others then please just list the emulator name. As far as the "update list" try again and if nothing happens then post the full log of when you're trying to do it.

the emulator in question (among others) is called Fusion, it's a genesis emulator. when running the program on its own all escape does is convert it to windowed mode. i'd like for it to do that even when being accessed through gameEX, but as far as i can tell, setting map keys to no simply doesn't work, for this or any emulator i've tried setting it to. I get the same behavior from fusion, mame, zsnes, mess, nestopia. everything has key mapping set to off, yet everything still quites when i hit escape.

i think perhaps it might be in conflict with the advance config file listed under emulator setup. it's listed as [Mapping off] Exit (process close). i've checked within that particular file and found this.

"#Make Escape key close emulator process

MapEscape=True"

this might be re'binding' this 'mapescape' value back to true, but i'm not sure. i try disabling this advanced config, but i still get the same results.

is there a raw config file that i can access for gameex where i can simply manually set "mapescape=false"? and if so, will running the settings tool anytime afterwords completely overwrite my modification and put me back to square one?

also, the 'update mame list' is consistantly hanging at %25. i've tried downloading the newest version of mame, but it made no change whatsoever. i'm not even sure where this 'log' file is that it's trying to access.

here's the log info for my latest attempt.

00:05:43.8 2/25/2010: Validating: Emulator_24: Manual Path: C:\GameEx\Assets\Sega CD\Manuals

00:05:46.7 2/25/2010: Updating MAME Game List

00:05:46.8 2/25/2010: Opening Listinfo.dat

00:05:48.3 2/25/2010: Reading ListInfo.dat

also i'd like to mention, that while this might seem like a rather annoying problem that needs to be fixed, i honestly enjoy learning the ins and outs of these things. tweaking this program is quite rewarding, even when the solutions are a bit elusive.

ESC will close the emulator, actually it will close the process Gameex launches, this means it can be an emulator or notepad. In some instances emulators will capture the ESC key and make it go in and out of windowed mode or bring up a menu. The advanced configuration is there to make esc send a different keystroke in addition to its original function. This mostly will fix any stubborn emulator.

Is there a reason you need esc to do something other than what it is doing?

As far as your update list goes, Define hanging, did you wait 5minutes or 45minutes, Gameex can and will take a while to generate a list. It runs mames listxml, then it verify against your roms and makes a list based on your filters. What are your system specs? We have yet to see a full log, in this thread.

Also, I understand you got the newest mame, great! But what about your roms? it can be that you have an incorrect set for your version. There are quite a lot of variables and we need more info.

by 'hanging' i meant that it quickly jumped from 0%-25% and then got stuck for about 15 minutes. is this something you guys think i should leave up overnight? i'll double check and make sure that i'm using the most current romset (i only have about seven of them).

also, when you ask for a full log, do you really mean for me to post the entire wall of text found under my log file? i just assumed that you guys would only want to look at the last few lines of code, but i'll post it here if you want.

in terms of the escape key, i'd simply like to hold onto the escape key functionality for each individual emulator. some emus bring up certain configuring options that i don't know how to get to otherwise. sometimes i need to tweak graphical settings or configure joypads, etc. for now i've just been manually opening the emulators from their specific folders if i want to initially configure settings, but it's be convenient if i could do it on the fly, or at least had the option. i thought that was the reason for having the 'map keys' option in the first place.

thanx for the help. i'm very new to this and i'll continue to keep my ears open and provide as much info as possible. i don't want my asking for help to be too cumbersome of an experience.

as for system specs, i'm running an amd athlon64 x2 5800 dual core 3ghz processor

6gigs ddr2 ram

nvidia 9800gt vid card

win7 64

...mmm....is there anything else you need?

oh. here's the entire logfile.

edit: i had a thought. is it possible that the download servers are down? i just tried to download some emulators from the setup program and none of them would download. i've had no problems with this before and speculate that this is only temporary. perhaps this and my update issue are related somehow.

Your problem is right here...

"Cannot Find MAME Path: MAME Disabled"

So when it tries to update the list... it has no list to update! Put in the appropriate MAME path and everything should work fine.

Posted

that's...really weird.

thank you so much for the help. it's updating now just fine.

i was hoping it would be something simple.

i'm learning all of this as i go, so hopefully i'll be a bit more prepared for future problems after what i've learned with this one.

from what i gather, the correct path was listed in the configuration utility, but i had to change it to something else and then change it back for it to register. weird.

the emulator in question (among others) is called Fusion, it's a genesis emulator. when running the program on its own all escape does is convert it to windowed mode. i'd like for it to do that even when being accessed through gameEX, but as far as i can tell, setting map keys to no simply doesn't work, for this or any emulator i've tried setting it to.

MapEscape=True"

this might be re'binding' this 'mapescape' value back to true, but i'm not sure. i try disabling this advanced config, but i still get the same results.

is there a raw config file that i can access for gameex where i can simply manually set "mapescape=false"? and if so, will running the settings tool anytime afterwords completely overwrite my modification and put me back to square one?

also, the 'update mame list' is consistantly hanging at %25. i've tried downloading the newest version of mame, but it made no change whatsoever. i'm not even sure where this 'log' file is that it's trying to access.

here's the log info for my latest attempt.

As I mentioned before, this emulator closes using the ESC key by default. Yes, it is true that it will go to windowed mode when running through windows but when running through command-line then it changes it's behavior. And that's how GameEx will launch it unless you wrote a wrapper for it or something.

This is taken from the emulator History.txt file:

When using the -fullscreen option, the ESC key will exit the emulator.

So you see.....The emulator itself closes using the ESC key. It has nothing to do with GameEx. It's the way the emulator was written.

ah hah. thanx for the info. now i can stop trying to fix a problem that isn't there.

oh, and the mame list updated just fine. it still lists games by the name of the zip file when looked at under 'emulated games', but the 'mame' category in the main menu lists them by name..

all of them....each and every mame game it can think of.

isn't it a bit strange that it would list every single game available as opposed to the ones in your library by default? is it normal to assume that mame users have the entire catalog?

You need to filter your list to show only available roms. :)

i know, i was just wondering why the default option was so all inclusive. it all works out now.

No problem. Glad you got it all sorted out. ESC is the standard key used by most emulators to exit when running from command-line. So only way to avoid that is to remap the ESC key to something else if you don't want it to exit.

As far as your MAME list looks like you got that sorted out as well. When running MAME using the integration of GameEx then it generates the name for you. When using under "Emulated Games" then a database ([Arcade]MAME.mdb) or a MAP file is required. Database would be the way to go in that case since it would just list what you have.

Not so strange to list every game by default since most of us have every game possible. But it's a simple fix for those who don't which looks like you figured out as well.

Looks like you're on your way! Have fun and let us know if you have further questions. ;)

If GameEx filtered by default, then your post would have read:

I have every mame rom - all of them....each and every mame game I can think of, but GameEx only shows 3472. isn't it a bit strange that it would filter games as opposed to listing every single game in your library by default? is it normal to assume that mame users don't want to show clones, etc?
