(Perhaps I'm one of the rare ones running Gameex on a CRT monitor.)

What I am noticing is that the picture quality of the MAME games is not what I recall from MAME in days past. The image is quite soft, and my monitor is sharp as they come. Obviously there is some upscaling going on but what can I do to get a sharper picture from MAME? I've tried fooling around with the command line options but I'm going nowhere fast.

Thanks for all suggestions!

I don't know that you are rare in using a CRT. I'd say most people running cabs use CRT's still. Anyway, there are some filters that you can use to adjust how MAME looks on your display. The other thing is that you might be using DirectDraw mode instead of D3D. The two look very different by default.

Macguyver,

I just thought that I would mention that if you took a roll of duct tape, along with your belt, and shoe laces, you should be able to fix most anything...

(I hope you understand the joke, or this is going to sound just plain silly.)

Not that it doesn't anyway.

You can find info on all of the options in the mame.ini file here:

What you consider 'soft' is probably (most likely) the 'hardware stretch' option in MAME, which is on by default. You can turn it off via command line, and see if it suits you better, but honestly, it's really how the games should look. I have MAME running on 2 CRT driven carts, and the other is an LCD. I think the CRT's are 100% better.
