Yeah, if you end up with a more complete list...POST IT! I spent a few hours trying to come up with a good list of games, but I was just using an old version of controls.dat. I suspect that using MAWS or another method might produce a better list. Also, if you figure out a good way to get 360° wheels working well with 270° wheel games, let me know. I was very disappointed, but probably gave up too easy.

Allrighty... I did a search in Romlister for driving games. It gave me 216 roms to start with....

I ran each game in Mame, and checked the controls for each game, and eliminated every one that didn't use a paddle, or a dial.

Any game that didn't work, or I didn't have the rom for, I verified at one of these three sites:

http://www.arcade-history.com/ (I was really impressed with this site, if KLOV diddn't have it, I found it here)

http://www.mamedb.com/category/Driving

http://www.klov.com/

I ended up with a list of 97 roms:

Pole Position II

Mille Miglia 2: Great 1000 Miles Rally (95/05/24)
Round Up 5 - Super Delta Force
American Speedway (set 1)

I found a couple of interesting things:

Lucky & Wild - Two player game that uses lightguns... the driver drives and shoots, and the passenger just shoots.

Night Stocker - Also uses a lightgun

Speed Freak - Vector Game

Race Drivin' - I left it in the list, but it also requires an Adstick device to play

Wheels Runner - Not on the list, but should be playable on a driving cab (I think it's a CHD game)

Here is the XML file:

driving.7z

If you load this in Romlister using "Settings and Tools" you can further search this list for screen orientation, or whatever you may desire. Also, you will be able to use the "batch output" to move your roms.

I checked, and 35 roms use a "dial", and 59 use a "paddle"... which adds up to 94.

If I search for !dial & !paddle, I get six games, one of which is "special criminal investigation", which definately uses a dial.

Bottom line... I believe this to be as complete a list as possible!

Awesome! I was going to grab it and take a look, but the link didn't let me download. Said something about being a bad xml format. Anyway, if you have a hint on the d/l or can repost a zipped version, I'll have a looksy!

I updated the linky....

I gave this a little more thought on the controls issue... I just need to set inc, and dec, for the pedal, and that will probably make most of the games work (more or less) correctly out-of-the-box.

I should also mention that Speed Freak is a BLACK & WHITE vector game. I just thought some people would find that interesting...LOL

Is that true? Most of these driving games will work with just setting the in and dec for pedal? Which ones?

:P

yep - that's a 100% true statement! (probably, more or less)

I'm going throught them now... When I'm done, I'll upload my romname.cfg's if you want, but then you'll have to program your controller to my keys, or write an AHK script to be able to use them.

BAHHH! It can't be as good as Fire Truck. Now that's a game. You and a buddy drive a fire truck to a fire that never materializes. Somehow you are directed to go in circles rather than just going straight there, but it's ok, cause there's no fire...apparently... Either way, you run out of fuel, so no worries. ;) Oh, and it's BLACK & WHITE!!!

Regarding B&W vector games,

In the latest Retro Gamer Magazine, the final part of the reader survey for the greatest arcade games was published.

4. Asteroids.

.

.

.

.

21. Tempest.

:)

I wonder if that is because Asteroids is a more ICONIC game... ;)

I think you meant "MORONIC" or

"IRONIC", because if they waited a year, they could have played in COLOR! :P

I agree, even though it kills me to do so. :( I don't think Tempest was widely (understood) accepted, and if you had them both running side-by-side, more people would recognize Aste (Hem) roids. Now that I've finally agreed with you (you can pick yourself up off of the floor), I hope you don't think the razzing is over!

Speaking of racing games, has the speed improved at all in Ridge Racer and Rave Racer? I'm still using an older version of MAME and it's slow as hell. I keep hoping they'll optimize it more so that it will run faster.

Don't get me wrong though, much as i like Asteroids, Tempest is a far better game, Just Asteroids (being the first big hitting vector game) is more indicitive of that era.

Well I just tried to play A.B. Cop and although I was able to accelerate and slow down I could not turn left or right. What am I doing wrong?

Posted

A.B. Cop uses a paddle (270° steering wheel). If you are using a 270 wheel, you just need to map the "paddle analog" control to the wheel's axis. If you are using some other controls, you would probably need to set "paddle analog inc" and "paddle analog dec" to your controls. If you have a 360° wheel, I think you should be able to set "paddle analog dec" to "mouse X-" and "paddle analog inc" to "mouse X+" (depending on how you have your controls hooked up). If you aren't using a steering wheel, you can just use the keyboard right and left arrows for inc and dec.

I only use keyboard. Well actually, its a cab with ultimarc's mini pac. No mouse, wheel, etc

Whoops!

If you want the Atari Pole Posistions I and II, the roms are polepos1, and poleps2a. So much for the definitive list! B)

You will also need to set "No Clones" to "I Want Clones".

If you have a "split set" don't forget to move the parent roms too!

Edit: It looks like "Splendor Blast" shouldn't be on the list at all.
